Hello !
I'll post this on the mentalism and on the bizarre forum. I want advice that badly I just got a phone call : somebody wanted me to perform street magic for 10 days in a huge open air happening in a city. He suggested that I could do rope magic. I explained that I only do mentalism and bizarre magick. He insisted. Cards, maybe ? Ropes are real visual, you know... I repeated that I only do mentalism and bizarre magick. The guy said that this would be impossible. Thousands of people passing by... Immense crowds. No visual act, no attention. I could call him back if I decided to do ropes anyway. Now, this is a major event. You don't get paid, but the magicians who got a licence to perform made thousands of dollars tip money. And it's huge for publicity too. But all those magicians who did it before really did STREET MAGIC. Why did they call me ? I don't know. Do I want to do it ? You bet. Do I know what to do in such a situation ? Not at all. So advice would be more than welcome. Thanks in advance ,

Dude break it up, give the guy what he wants and add your bits in to. as Dr Z says there other things you can do - street magic is quick and visual at least it helps if it is as it draws attention which is what you want once you have their attention its up to you where you take it!
Im sure as a bizarrist you must have loads of props - knife through arm - razors etc that will get attention! |

Give the audience what they want leave the mentalism semantics for this message board. Do what gets tips or starve, I work the streets and do a mix of magic mentalism and geek magic.
It works. |

I don't really know if this would suit you, but I have recently been forming an approach to do mentalism for random people in the street - "Good Afternoon, I'm a psychology student and I was wondering if you would like to take part in some rather interesting research. It should only take a moment"
Then I say a silly little sentence like "Two cows in a crop field go boo", then snap my fingers and say quicky what letter are you thinking of now, don't tell me just yet, let me write it down first but try and go with the one that just kind of feels right and don't change your mind. Then wait a moment and get very serious and concentrated all of a sudden, look into their eyes and ask them what they letter is. Then Nail write it (if the M force doesn't work) and act surprised it worked and that you found someone who is quite responsive. Then do it again and go onto coin in hand without any cheating. Then when it feels right I tell them that I am a student of psychology but I am also a mentalist/psychological illusionist or just tell them the whole thing was a lye and you were hired to be the 'magician', but only if they are reacting positively. If it goes wrong, you just ask them some more silly questions and pretend to tick a few boxes on your pad ad walk away, no harm done. If it goes right, you should have gained rapport and broken any preconceptions about being a mind reader or magician, your 'in' and can do whatever you like. Good Luck! hope that helps a little (If anyone has any constructive criticism or just down right slagging of this little approach, I would be happy to hear it)

Mentalism with cards - Public LOVE this regardless of what you hear, and very easy to pull off
Haunted Key Drawing Duplication Name Reveals etc. etc. There are many things that you can do, it may be in the realms of 'mental magic' as they say, but noone will know the difference, or even care as long as you entertain! |

I do walk around alot, and when I stop my pulse in the street everyone is watching! Then when I grab a random onlooker and stop his pulse they go CRAZY! I also perform Jermay's Twisted Palm a lot in the street and this receives an astounding reaction. hope it helps

Incorporate some items that your mentalist persona might use, and, Tah-Dah! You'll have your prop candy.
Magic is indeed a special branch of the performing arts, but sometimes over educating a client in the validity of your particular style is unnecessary and perhaps misguided. Do your thing. If your act is a success, the absence of ropes and coins won't be felt. Magic is show business, of course, and living on an artistic island might not be all that marketable. Without trying, though, how would any of us really know? Best of luck with your job. |
