Hi all, I'm working on a standard 4-coin CA and I'm wondering if anyone has a strong preference on using a shell over a flipper or a flipper over a shell. I don't have a flipper at the moment but I think a flipper would be a bit more visual with a more difficult re-set; however a shell would have an easier re-set with a less visuality.
What do you think? |

If you can classic palm (or find a work-around that works for you) Roth's coins across with a shell is easy to do and ends quite clean... The spectator is left with four normal coins in their hand, you're holding out the shell but there's no heat. Easily ditched while they're checking out the coins, or just add it back on top when you take back the coins.

Turtles every time, with either the Roth routine or something very like it. I’ve tried dolphins, splits, utc - the “in the hands part” is worth the compromises of the turtle. The quality of the turtle matters to me; the sets I use are a custom set of Todd Lassen (RIP and sorely missed) and a deep dish morgan set from Mark Mason/Bob Swadling. Another great advantage of the turtle is that you can use spectacular coins like liberties, morgans, or whatever your local silver currency was, and it makes a great talking point. Most folks like to take a look at those kinds of coins because they’re just interesting objects; it gives you a little bit of time to banter with the audience too.
I recently switched back to the Roth routine (in their hands as much as possible) from a pure sleight routine in my hands, and the difference is night and day. It’s a classic for a reason. I think folks get nervous of being “dirty” but the action happening in their hands is very open and moves the attention around very conveniently, especially for the finale. That said, an ungaffed version is also a great option to have; Eric Jones has a good one and Gary Jones has another great three coin version. Mine is a mix up of various moves in Bobos, with sound used as a convincer, if you get what I’m saying. Now I re-read that it sounds like I’m smoking something californian. Do we really need to speak in code? |
