I wanted to have my own version of Alan Warner's Enigmatic, but I didn't want to make a straight up copy. My version uses Egyptian symbols, and hence I came up with the name "Eye of Egypt" for this one.
My version also took inspiration from "ESP Chip Sational", so that unlike the Warner version, chips can be laid face down into the chest. Here are some images: As you can see, the chips have the "Ankh" symbol on the back, and five different other symbols at the front, each in it's own color. The chest size is 72x48 mm, and the chips are 35x25 mm. Printing the chips was a real pain, since my printer can only print one color at a time, meaning I need to change color multiple times, and also watch over the process. The back side is rougher than the front, as the fronts (with the colored symbols) are printed towards the build plate, which is smooth. |

More wonderful work mroek!
Purely subjective of course, but I wonder if more muted colors would suit this prop more?

It would be possible to leave the impression of the symbols in the chips, and then try to brush some paint into them. However, due to size it might not be that easy. Filling with paint and then sanding after drying could work, though. That should leave only the symbols painted, but I'd have to test to see if it is feasible. |

Lightly sanded paint could be beautiful!
Of course, we don't know what ancient paints looked like when they were fresh, but as they've aged the pigments take on a muted, organic tone. While your piece is obviously not a relic, the earthier tones could help capture the essence of the presentation.

Øyvind, all 3D printed magical props look very nice ⭐
I especially like the design of the decorated box 👍 Artificial ageing for a printed magic trick 🤔 |

I decided to test a different approach to the chips, where the symbol on the front was left empty by the printer, so I could paint them in. Since the symbol is debossed into the chip, I just painted over both the symbol and the edges around, and after drying, I sanded the whole surface to get rid of the paint outside the symbol.
It didn't turn out exactly as I had planned, because the paint had crept too deep down into the hairline cracks in the print to be sanded completely away. I guess maybe with a lot more sanding, but that would also make the chips a fair bit thinner, so I decided to just tell myself that the surplus paint in the cracks adds character to the chips... Here's how that turned out: I'm quite happy with it, despite those defects. |
