There was a really neat thimble act that used the "bells" off an alarm clock as the thimbles. It was a stage thing, though.
Manipulation thimbles bear as much resemblance to real thimbles as the tiny "billiard balls" that come with a magic set do to the real thing.

Tailors are real men and they use thimbles. So do shoe makers.

Until recently I had never seen a thimble routine and only vaguely knew that they could be manipulated. This past month I started working with them. I did a it production for my eight year old neice this past weekend. She loved it AND she knew what they were. So I think that the blanket statement that anyone under 25 wouldn't know what they are is absolutely wrong and insulting to the many who do know what they are and what they are used for. Sure, they may not look magical, but you can make them magical in the eyes of those around you.

Sorry, I know this topic started some time ago, but I was just doing a search for thimble magic and came across this now. I also did a quick production and vanish for my 8 year old daughter and I was quite surprised to learn that she knew exactly what it was. I asked here how she knew this. She said she had read the story "Thimblina" - POW!! INSTANT MEANING FOR KIDS.
As for meaning, itself, I thinks some of the posts mentioned above have overthought the issue. I mean, when you do a sponge ball routine, do you go into detail to explain what the ball is? Probably not since it is viewed as a magic prop. Do people wonder why a grown person is carrying such a thing? Probably not since you are viewed as a magician and not just an "ordinary" person. Now, getting back to the reason I was searching this topic. I recently purchased my first set of thimbles and I am starting to get hooked. I just bought the Berland Thimble Act. It comes with a set of 9 wooden thimbles, a larger thimble, a shot glass (with gimmick), and a 4 thimble holder. All for under $10.00. My question is, does anyone perform this routine? What do you think of it? Also, are the thimbles supposed to stack one on top of the other (because these wooden ones don't). Thanks in advance for your replies.

Berland's thimble act is one of the very first thimble routines I did. I liked it alot, but as time went on...I dropped it for routines not needing holders. No, the Berland thimbles do not stack..and they are fragile! If you really think you are getting hooked, get Joe Mogars book on thimbles...until then...you don't know the meaning of hooked ! Also, look into the Rosini Thimble routine which can be found in the Dai Vernon or Jon Ramsay's 10 Thimble Production which can be found in the Ramsay Legend!

Regarding Berland's Thimble Act: I too just purchased this item, from a seller on eBay. Unfortunately, what was described in the auction as new is clearly not, and it's missing some things. First, it's missing that gimmicked shot glass you mentioned. More importantly to me, it's missing the "beautiful illustrated instruction" as stated on the cool old box in which the set came. I've emailed the seller and, so far, he has not responded. This could get interesting, because I bought another item from him for which I have not yet paid and for which he has not yet contacted me, but that's another story. Anyway, two questions: are these instructions and the shot glass something I can live without? Secondly, may I ask where you purchased the set? I might just bite the bullet and buy new again (only really new this time). By the way, as Mike Gallo mentioned, the thimbles do not stack and, according to some other posts I've read here in the Café, that's less desirable than stacking thimbles. -Dan |

Dan,
The gimmicked shot glass is only one part of the routine and is used as a potential finale. You can perform most of the routine without the shotglass effect. As for the instructions, They are only two small pages. One page is the typed instruction sheet, and the other page is a series of very small diagrams. If you have other instructional material at your disposal, you do not need to rely exclusively on these instructions. I purchased Jeff McBride's World Class Manipulations DVD's and it seems as though I should be able to perform most of the moves on it with the Berland Thimbles. The only things I will not be able to do are any moves requiring stacking. I purchased my set through http://www.browsersden.com They are a Canadian dealer based out of Toronto. I have purchased products from them before and they are very reliable. They have the Berland Thimble Act in regular stock (brand new) for $15.00 Canadian (That's about $10.00 USD).

I just started working on a routine using the moves learned in McBride's video Vol.1. On there he also gives some alternatives to using actual thimbles. I mayself am working with the cap off a tube of chapstick.

Ivan Amodei uses chapstick lids for his thimble routine. Very fast paced and amazing.
For walk-around the thimble routine must move fast and end strong. My only problem with it is that there is no audience involvement (very important in walk around), so the audience just sits there like a bump on a log and watches. It can be amazing, though, just move it along quick-like. |

Some of the same vanishes and reappearances for thimbles can also be done with a finger ring positioned at the tip of your index or middle finger. For walk around, try borrowing a finger ring and doing a few vanishes and productions instead. Your "finish" might actually be a ring flight to your back pocket. Just a thought.

The cheap ones from China stack if you get several packages and mix and match. they come in three sizes but that means nothing when you start stacking them.
Jean Hugard's book on thimbles has everything you need. Search ebay, I'm too lazy to stick my own link here. the book tells you which "pro" sets to look for. The wood set is nice and has a jumbo for productions.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.
