What is the first appearance of the shiner (or light) in magical literature? Also very interested in it's first published appearance in a mentalism routine. Any idea?

I'm going to guess at this, because I can't find my copy, but I have a feeling that it shows up in Sharps and Flats, which was published in 1894.

How early was Robert-Houdin's book on card cheats? Does he mention them in there?

Some wandering shepherd found mine in a clay jar in a cave near Q'umran. It was difficult to translate, though. Mostly in Aramaic.
