Hello,
Thanks for making such an amazing place to communicate about magic! I am a fairly raw beginner and a long-time admirer of card magic, and I know quite a few self-working tricks and basic sleights. I've read "The Royal Road to Card Magic" by Frederick Braue and Jean Hugard, and I've learned many of the sleights (not some of the harder moves, I'm still working on those). I did find it dense at parts, and hard to understand. I'm interested in learning more card magic, and increasing my technical abilities. If anybody has suggestions of where a beginner can go to find good card tricks/sleights please let me know. Thrilled to be here! All the best, Jacob. |

Welcome Jacob!
I suggest you acquire a book called SCARNE ON CARD TRICKS with many very "professional" self-working card tricks. This venerable book is available in both an inexpensive soft-cover version printed by Dover and a slightly more expensive hardcover, too. For easy-to-do, but very effective magic tricks, there is another titled SCARNE'S MAGIC TRICKS. With a little searching you may find these combined into one hard cover for easy reference. These self-workers will give you ample opportunity to get experience actually performing in front of real people while you are working on your sleights. There is an almost unbelievable number of other books/YouTube/DVDs/downloads out there devoted to Magic in general and card tricks specifically. My suggestion is to not allow yourself to be overcome by this rush of information and devote your time and energy to just one or two before moving on to the rest. Try doing a Café search for just about any card sleight and you'll have enough information to answer your specific questions. Above all... Have FUN Julie |

Welcome Jacob.
I was never a card guy as I have trouble learning magic from books. Then I got a copy of Oz Perlman's "Born to Perform" DVD and have had a blast with cards since. He does a great job of teaching basic to medium level sleights, along with tricks. Hihgly recommend: https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4191 Have fun!
