Im having a bit of trouble with the double lift and I was wondering whether its ok to slightly trim one of the cards, assuming I'm always goign to be double lifting with that card (such as in the 2 card monte.
I have a pack of Svengali cards ( I think they are called) which are incredibly easy to double lift with, as one card is shorter than the other. Anyone ever tried this? or is it really a bad thing to do. Thanx. Tom |

Really a bad thing to do. You will need a good double lift if you are to progress with card magic. If you cheat now you are asking for trouble. I would suggest you continue to practice. Practice with new cards, old cards, differnt type of cards. It will just come to you and then you'll be in a much better place.

Can you describe the problem you are having?
Did you learn this move from a book or video? It is really straight forward and not difficult when practiced. You should be able to DL with your eyes closed, if you cannot your problem might be that you just haven't done it enough times. When you can DL 10-15 times in a row withyour eyes closed you should "own it". If need be, buy some glycerin at the drug store and apply a tiny amount to the finger tips and thoroughly rub in, do not leave a residue that will migrate to the cards that will ruin them. Some have also recommended modeling clay for the same purpose, it also doubles as an exercise tool for coin manipulation.

Ah I learnt it from a book, although the book was a fairly basic one and really doesn't have enough pictures in as I would have liked , I an contemplating over whether to buy a video, but the ones I found cost around 40-50 $s which atm is a bit too higher price for me , so I'm going to continue practising the one ive got in book form for now, and if after a few weeks I still cant do it ill have to invest in a video I think

Try getting Gregory Wilson's video. I think it's called Double Take and it teaches a dozen double lifts you can incorporate in your routine. You'll learn after a considerable amount of practice.

Lift off top card for some reason and get break under second by push over and pulling back.
Replace top card and your set. But if you gonna do a couple od D/lifts then this might not be the way to go. An explanation of the move can be found in the above resources then practice it.

Wilsons's double take was the best DL video I've seen.
It was the first video that really helped me with my DL. Another great video is Daryl's volume 5. I am daryl's fan so I will not tell what I would have choosen. Daryl's Encyclopedia is gr8 BUT it's mostly sleights. And in your case you'd probabaly will want to go with trick videos. My suggestion to get Daryl on DVD and trick's on book. But there are plus and minus to all. Good luck with your DL. Like all magic it needs lot's of practice. Give it and you'll be rewarded. |

If you are new you should not immediatly try to do the kickass looking DL's. for example take the 2 cards at the back with your thumb and at the front with your middle finger. strip them off and turn them slowly while you keep a little pressure (please not too much). oh, and do this turnover also with 1 card to check how you turn it normally. do it the same way and it looks very smooth and natural.
good luck |

Just keep practicing as many others have said. It really is an automatic move when you have practiced enough. If I could give you one tip it would be if you are doing a DL that has a get ready put some time between the get ready and the move. If you do the strike DL don't worry about the time because there is no break. If you need help on what I am saying PM me! Good luck and keep practicing.

Isn't angle also important? Since i`ve noticed as my deck is worn out, the thickness of card is more visible when i`m doing a double/triple with a single card only.

Look up and learn Vernon's DL or Bob White's Flash Double. Concentrate on naturalness and uniformity of handling ( see Bob White's notes "It's A Matter of Style") Ignore and avoid any DL that flips , spins, pops, or performes any acrobatics whatsoever.
All of the above is personal opinion and should be taken as such. Van

Agree with van, even though Brad Christensen actually teaches a ok double that spins slowly
The one key-issue is the following: It has to feel natural, look natural, "be" natural - and if you can accomplish a DL that is all these things, then you got yourself a good DL!
