Good picks jeff, unfortunate that most of these are hard to find now,
but worth getting if you can. Because you asked, my top 5 off the top of my head is, 5, "Card tricks" by professor romanoff, (1916) it predates "royal road" but I tend to prefer this one, long out of print, but not hard to find a reading copy. 4, "campfire magic" by mac king, (2010) a very recent purchase, mainly a kids magic book, but it's the best one I've read targeted to kids, it's still in print. 3, "showmanship for magicians" by dariel fitzkee, (1943) My favorite book on the performance side of magic, it's far from up to date, but I find the authors dislike of magicians humorous. it's still in print. 2, "complete course in magic" by mark wilson, (1975) Fantastic encyclopedia, a whole career could probably be made on it's contents alone, don't know if it's still in print, but it's not hard to find, get the most recent edition. 1, "magic for dummies" by david pogue, (1998) Based on the title it was written specifically for me, and it doesn't disappoint. Built up of individual tricks recommended by the big names of the time, lance Burton, Michael Ammar, Sylvester the jester, etc. out of print, but readily available. |

All of the Steve Beam Semi-Automatic Card Tricks. I only own 1 at the moment having a very depleted library due to travelling but I have read all of them over the last 20 years and they are by far my favourite card magic books. They are not only filled with incredible magic principles and routines, but he gives you complete scripts and is a very very (and I mean very) funny writer. If I had to pick 1 to recommend it would be 8 because I took so much from that book that I use every day. However it’s impossible to pick a favourite as they are all filled with hidden gems and amazing ideas. One of Max Mavens best card tricks is hidden in there as well (personal opinion).

Anything by Harry, Rufus Steele, J.Stewart Smith, Al Leech, Frank Garcia, John Bannon. I wish I hadn't sold my copy of Collected Works of J Stewart Smith many years ago. Big mistake.

Right now my #1 is Nick Trost - Subtle Card Creations Vol 1. There are at least 7 or 8 volumes, I do not have them all (yet). In Vol 1 chapter 10 covers some great packet tricks, and the Appendix has more Sleights and Subtleties than I could ever learn.
I found this thread by searching for recommended book lists... I will try to find the books recommended here. Some seem to be out of print, unfortunately. In the age of e-books, it seems that they could easily be sold. Luckily I have 3 of the books listed. That is more than enough to get me into trouble... I mean get me going. ???? |
