That bad review reads like someone with a personal gripe. The routines in his trailer look very good.

Look beyond silly. Silly is easy and you can weave that in as needed. But if that's all you do, it's cheap.
Learn to be great and add silly here and there to add some texture to your act.

All these non-kids magicians have such great and creative ideas that play well for kids and adults.
And so do so many others.

I'm a long-time kid show magician. I agree with TheAmbitiousCard. Do fun silly colorful tricks but also impressive foolers.

The comment I get a lot and love is "The adults loved the show as much as the kids".

The amount of silly depends a lot on the age of your audience.

3-6 Pile it on!

7-9 Try to be more FUNNY than silly. (Yes, there is a difference!)

10 & up Use very sparingly
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

In terms of your approach with each age group, if you want you can modify your act depending on the group personality and group mood which you discover as you show up to the gig and as you do your show. When the show is all older kids, say, 8yr olds or 10 yr olds, as mighty Fool said, I do less silly stuff, more funny and cool, not exactly like David Blaine, but more like that than with younger kids. However sometimes the older kids react better to the silly goofy material and comedy, so then I do that, but still not like a preschool show, and I still do some cool stuff. Some guys always do a family show, and try to entertain the adults and all ages equally, and the show is mostly the same each time, and they just modify the presentation somewhat, but not the material for the most part. Whatever works for you and your audience.
