Picked up a used Duke's Dye Version without instructions. I have the tube and silks and rainbow streamer. Is there a reference to a routine that I can find. Do any of you have a routine that you might want to share.
Thanks, Ed Fultz |

I offered the original instructions from Linking Ring Magazine several months ago to all Café members that were interested. Sorry you missed the offer.

Hello Ed:
There is a very good comedy routine for Duke's Dye Version in "Professional Magic for Children" by David Ginn. The book is once again being printed and you can get it from David at http://www.ginnmagic.com I don't like most of Ginn's routines, but this routine (and most others in the book) is a real winner. The routine uses two volunteers and the premise is that the tube and silks are used as a memory tester for the volunteers. There are some real funny moments in the routine. Ron |

Wmhegbli, I'm sorry I missed the offer also. I probably didn't need it at the time. If it is still available please let me know.
Ron, I have that book. I will look into it. It does sound good and I knew I had a book with a routine in it just couldn't remember which one. Thanks again. Ed Fultz |

The David Ginn book tells you all you need to know. Like Ron, it is one of the Ginn routines that is comfortable.
If you belong to Ask Alexander, you can access the Linking Rings to get the routine. Richard

I have two versions of Dye-Version on my site, just to complicate the issue. One is in The Wizards' Journal #17, called "Spellbinder's Dye-Version Version." The other is in my Mini-Mysteries Book 2, called "The Mongolian Silk Mystery - Revisited."

Is it easy to make one up yourself? Isn't it just cardboard? Thanks.

Nope, not cardboard. The original was a Contidina tomato paste can.

The Abbott's gimmick is turned of brass and flesh colored and sells for $35 alone.
I have a spare if anyone's interested. Email me if you are. Thanks

The beauty of Fred Johansen's Mongolian Silk Mystery is that no gimmick is needed, therefore there is no problem with trying to handle, hide, and load a big metal thing and no problem getting rid of it when it's empty. That is true whether you use his method for dying a number of silks, or merging the silks into a long streamer (Dye-Version). Instead of wondering how you are going to dispose of that big metal thing in the tube, you can either tear it open, or let it drop open to reveal a message; concentrating on presentation instead of technique.

Yes, I know Abbott's consistently raises their prices. I have 2 price sheets from a few years back and you can see it mostly down the line. I'm not complaining, but I a jump from $10 to $35 did surprise me. It was not so long ago when I bought mine.
I went ahead and checked the pricelists, and the one for Catalog #25 (Prices effective December 31, 1999) listed the Duke's Dye Version Gimmick for $10. The pricelist for Catalog #26 (Prices effective September 1, 2005) listed the gimmick at $20. It doubled in less than 5 years! If it is $35 now then it has went up 250% in less than 10 years! If you paid $5 for yours 40 years ago, in 30 years it had only doubled in price to $10. In the last 10 years it has doubled, and almost doubled again! That is why I was surprised at the price.

I came across this thread recently. My question is, can a Massel Tube be used instead of a Dye tube?

The the tube is unrolled, inside facing the audience, revealing the middle of the streamer passing through, and the 4 hankies are gone, showing they transformed into the displayed streamer. Then the specialized message for your event is also shown on the inside of the paper at the same time. I don't think this is possible with a Massel Tube. The Massel Tube produces scarves and things, not very well adapted to transforming or an open blendo effect. You could do a blendo, but then you cannot with draw the transformed silk from both ends. Maybe you could do only part of the effect, but why only do half a trick. |

It would work if you don't mind switching your load tube for a cardboard (paper towel) tube open on both ends and divided in half with a cardboard center divider. You can even end with the message by rebuilding your Massal Tube so it has a flap. Personally, though, I would keep the Massal tube for other things and use one of the methods I recommended above in this thread.
