Truly wonderful. I'm hard pressed to think of any other magical performance I've seen that was more personal or moving. It's poignant reminder that theatre, not magic, is the art form. Magic is just the genre. I was lucky enough to see Darren's show in New York at the Atlantic theatre Company-- a truly tiny theatre. The show would eventually move to Broadway. That show was a masterclass, as much for what went wrong and how he handled it and his audience as for what went right. I was lucky enough to come away with
a signature on my first edition of Absolute Magic. On our way back to our hotel my girlfriend pulls from her purse the best little souvenir she saved from the show. She must have thought it was just a disposable little nothing from our time at the theatre pre-show but for a magician it turned out to be the greatest little souvenir. Nuff said. |

I personally think this one of the best live shows Derren has ever performed. Some might argue otherwise. Derren’s way of bringing the old classics like Psychometry and stage hypnosis, even Card in a Box to such a modern setting show is just pure showmanship. Ofcourse Andy and Andrew play a huge role in the scripting of the show, but Derren’s persona and charisma just blows it out of the water! One of my absolute favourite bits from the show was the Teddy Bear one, I think it really captures the emotional connection between a father and his son. And the choir was just icing on the cake. Also to mention the incredible stage design and projections enhanced it even more. All in all, an absolutely incredible show.

WOW! What a show!
...and a masterclass in how to do one. How to have a theme, how to introduce it in sections and link it all together to build the ending. And a real personal one as well. "Showman": Someone who knows how to get, keep and entertain an audience - No one can say they got short-changed in this show. This particular show was the Copperfield version of mentalism: Comedy, entertain and then kill with the emotional kick. ***! I wish I was half as good as that!

And if you go to Copperfield's show 5 nights in a row like I did, you see many things that are supposed to be random and ad-lib that happen every night! So if he does 350 shows, that's 350 people out of millions who see his show live and on TV that found a little something out about the glass after leaving the theatre. A snowflake in a snowstorm. Mentalists who "Instant-stooge" have people seeing their show very differently to the rest of the audience.

Why would you think the glass is g*****
From the TV [filmed] version of the show, it seems obs that it's not. You just need to think less like a working mentalist and more like - you have a big TV show budget. As you can see the cover [etc]... I would expect that it's all real at the end. If I were to guess it may be earlier on [before the glass comes out] that something is not a real version... The people who may have a different view of the show are the ones who called the coin flip, or the spec who stands on the chair/goes to the box. The coin flip - I don't even know if you can call it instant s***** I mean, if the person is off stage, and told or taught to do something - because of the time away from the audience, does that not sort of fall into just plain old s**** rather than instant s*****? I don't know the rules on this. If Derren whispered to the person on stage, 'if x happens say y... otherwise say z' - that would be an instant s***** all day in my book. But to take them away from the audience. Then have yourself or your team give them the instructions... it's sort of between two stools for me. And the spec who stands on the chair. They, or their partners can maybe backtrack a fair bit. Due them... well missing an intermission. This is better, as they may have questions, but hopefully won't actually be able to know for sure. They just have some of the pieces of the puzzle that only a few other people may be savvy enough to notice. I think Derren is awesome at the presentation/patter. I mean in all his shows over the years. Though I did find this hard to watch on TV. But maybe I was tired or maybe it was a little more laboured than normal. Probably more that I was tired. I do like his use of humour in all his work. |

I've been watching Derren Brown for years on tv before I got into magic myself. Finally saw him live last year. I think pre-magic-me would've been blown away, but magic-me now loved it so much. I enjoyed every second of it.
Watched the tv recording and enjoyed it again. I don't know if it's his best live show, but for me it's my favorite because Ive seen it live. I really hope I can get my hands on the book. |

Okay so I finally got roung to watching it after saying I would ages back and it hits just as hard now as it did when I saw it live.
The only missing routine I remember was a Desire/Sneak Thief routine with couples which was so/so and to be honest the only thing I'm 100% sure of the method on. I think I learned a lot from rewatching it knowing what was to come in how to structure an act. It's all stuff I already know but seeing it done so masterfully I think drove the point home.
