Hello,
I have been experimenting with how to make some ectoplasm manifestations. I’m more on the side of playing than of presentation, so I do not have a practical application for this. I do think it would be incredibly fun to use in a historical seance. This was made with the Elmers brand glow in the dark slime kit that is available here locally and online. The kit is non toxic and comes with two colors of glow in the dark Elmer’s glue and the activator that eventually makes the slime come together and stop sticking. Like most glowing toys, this is charged with bright light and has a very bright glow in a darkened room. I was lazy and bought the kit, but there are all kinds of recipes for slime online using things like borax, shaving cream, saline solution, etc. Slime is probably familiar to people with kids around as it is all the rage right now, and might already be passe. I have a feeling if you mention slime to kids, or offer up the ingredients that they will make more slime than you would know what to do with. And really, it is just fun to play with, so if kids are around it is an entertaining activity. I am doing some quality control right now to see what the shelf life is, different formulations, etc. Not sure if it stains, and I personally would not get it near anything porous or fabric, because I am sure it will make a sticky mess of those things. I thought it would be fun to share here. I am on Instagram as Gingerbreadforest if anyone is interested in a short video. Best wishes, Renee Click here to view attached image. |

Ectoplasm by itself should be just the beginning. The next step is to figure out how to make it manifest the faces of the dead.

A concept I played with a while back was having a bandage in a jar as an example of how mediums used the bandages as ectoplasm in the dark. Bandage had a concealed magnet in the hem so it could be controlled or used like a bottle pendulum. Not sure if I've got any photos but I'll have a look.

Couldn't find the photos of the original and sold it a while back so made a quick mock up of what it was like. It's more Victorian spiritualist bandages ectoplasm rather than ghostbusters. Original had a little bit of glow in the dark paint on so it had a little glow in the dark as it would have been done in the past. The pk magnets are in the base of th bandage as it hangs freely it is very responsive to a magnet under the table. Jerking your knee up and down as it moving all over. I do like making things like this where you can talk about people faked it in the past and then have it actually do something as if the ghost has really materialised.

Cheers, I've used the same idea on bottle pendulums for Lovecraft story, the horrible old man. I was going to take them to Doomsday but I know several other people have made their own versions and I don't like to step on people's toes flooding the market with effects on the same theme. Made ones like the ectoplasm in a few ways, works well with rope which I've done as hangmans rope before.

I always love seeing curiosities from your collection. My mom has a massive collection of dolls, and we often joke about which of them might be haunted. So, I always appreciate any kind of haunted doll. Your displays of ectoplasm are very classic and perfectly imagined. Thank you for sharing and for your response. |

Back in the late 80's - early 90's when I set up my first paranormal research group I labelled two files in our filing cabinet "apports" and "ectoplasm" as a joke - We did actually fill the apports one up but the ectoplasm file stayed stayed empty for years. Then one day after we appeared on Blue Peter a small bottle arrived anonymously through the post with the words "this is ectoplasm" scribbled on a note and a white liquid inside. I asssumed my brother had sent it as a joke and I threw it in the bin only to find out later that he knew absolutely nothing about it. I still occasionally wonder what was actually in that bottle!
I have made a couple of miniature pk versions of my poppets that are sealed inside bottles, one hanging on a hangman's noose that swings around and the other that just rattles around inside, both work nicely if you strap a Raven just above your knee. |

I would love to hear more about your research group! Collecting ghost stories is a compulsive habit of mine, and I worked in a haunted building for years. Maybe a ghost stories thread? I have one that gives me chills just thinking about it.
Your poppets are wonderful! |
