Dan check out Jay Sankey's Mr Clean coin's across, it's excellent. Yes, there are some great gimmicked versions about but I also think spectators recognise skill when they see it. The other thing to think about is exposure; these days more and more gaffs are being exposed.

Re: I also think spectator's recognise skill when they see it...
Most audiences expect magic from a magician. If they wanted to see skill, they would ask a juggler to perform. I make an effort to avoid any displays of skill. And certainly would feel defeated if told my work comes across as skillful. I want the stuff to look magical. The methods exist to support the routines, be they gaffs or sleights.

You can do the hopping halves with no gimmicks, using a classic palming. If you have any questions regarding that let me know, I'll try to help.

How about looking at the gaffs and inventing something that could not be done otherwise. Just look at the trick 'Blasted!'. It's all about the effect. Take your coin set and find something that could not be done without those coins. Here is just one avenue: spies sneak around looking for information. And they turn in up in the strangest places, yet almost never get caught. Then when caught... they wind up being traded for other captured spies.

Mike, Cheers for the recommendation, for those of you who are interested I have recently posted my version of the hopping halves routine in the secret sessions section of this site. It can be viewed here http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......37&0
It was developed by watching the gimmicked version performed and working out a handling from there. I haven't used any other routines as reference but would appreciate being informaed if there is a similar routine out. The ending was inspired from watching Chris Korn and Albert Goshman perform. I know Mike has a different handling of this routine which works better for him. If the sleights in the routine don't suit you you can always substitute one which suits your style. The goal of this routine was to have "no" visible sleights and have the magic happen on it's own as per the gimmicked version. Also I have tried to get away from the aspect of "the spectator is wrong" and get them actively involved in the routine. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to your comments Chris |

Warren,
Though I greatly admire Jay Sankey's contributions in magic I find his coinwork far from natural. The way his sleights are done are very very clever, mind you, but they don't look to me as magical. They look like sleight of hand. (I have yet to see someone backpinching without looking like he's backpinching) I don't want to be disrespectful, because I could only wish to be as creative as Jay, but his is not my rolemodel of magical looking coinmagic. I think performing sleight of hand magic (be it with or without gaffs) needs a lot of introspection... Are all those beautiful, technical sleights we learn and study also REALLY INVISIBLE to the eyes of a layperson? Honestly??? I know mine are not. And it's hard work!

RE: "The other thing to think about is exposure; these days more and more gaffs are being exposed"
Hmmm. I suppose that these days more and more of everything is being exposed. One cannot live in a 768kbs downloadable world and not expect that information, once tightly kept, is now available to everyone, anywhere there's a DSL D-SLAM within a 5 mile radius. I guess that's a great a motivation to change old ways, and experiment with new ones. I think, at least for now, the CSB secret is still under wraps. BTW Dan. I have to disagree with you RE: Sankey's coin magic. While I'll be the first to admit that back pinching has many tells, and needs to be carefully scripted to be effective, I find the bulk of Jay's coin manipulation to be very natural... for him. He's a twitchy and exitable guy, so those types of actions and hand movements seem very natural for him. For someone a little less energetic and enthusiastic, they would seem very out of place. Just MHO. Best, Mike |

Thank's again to all the replies on this topic.i don't personally want to get in to a debate on who I like or dislike as a magician because everyone has there own tastes, also I think everyone has something to offer.
back to the subject of no gimmick hopping halves,i have played with a couple of versions myself and ask other people for there input because I feel they may come up with idea's that I have not. I'm one of those people that if I can do an effect with out a gaff that is alway's the way I prefer to go,i'm not against using gaff's however as sometime's it's the only practical answer, once again it's down to personal choice. many thank's again to everyone. |

Might be abit late in the posting, but Jamy Ian Swiss's 'Another Interesting Application of that Principle'
If you can't find it sold anywhere, try Jamy's site. (Quick google search shall get you easy results.) The one thing about Hopping Halves is its the best buy for gimmicked coins. You get a whole bunch of different coin gaffs in this one set. Well worth the purchase. SHould you buy the set just for the Hopping Half trick? No. I've watched somebody to the gimmicked version and the non gimicked version, and it looked the same. The reason you use gaffs is to make it look impossible, but also most times if the sleight of hand isn't possible. Get the hopping halves for the gimmicks, not for the trick. |

Mike ,
Considering Sankey you're completely right. His moves fit his person perfectly, and me,well...absolutely not. So for me he is not a rolemodel because of that. But how many aspiring technicians do not evaluate if a technique fits their physiognomy? A lot of good magicians have published material that fits them like a glove and made them the deservend stars of magic they are. But sometimes I feel that students do not realise mastering these techniques will not automatically give them the same fluence and naturalness as the creator. Think about Slydini, Goshman, Kurtz, Andrus or what I've seen from Mickey Silver. His coinstuff looks amazing but are Mickey Silver fans going to do their coinmagic in the same wiggling, dancing, handwaving way as he does? Man I hope not!

Dan, you and I are in total agreement it would seem Very well put. I love to watch Mickey's demo tape (and would love to see his DVD sometime soon!), but I could never pull off the moves he does... Not a bad thing for Mickey, or for me, but a reinforcement of what you and I have been eluding to.
James, you said it man. The effect looks too similar gaffed or ungaffed to make doing it ungaffed worth it. I'd rather entertain the heck out of my audience and show them something that looks impossible than impress myself with my S.O.H. skills. This has been a great post all around I'd say. Best, Mike |

I first learned a gimmickless hopping halves after PMing Peter Marucci about an old Linking Ring column. He sent me his version as well as two more explanations for other tricks. I have since also learned the Jenest handling and utilizing the Ross Bertram move he teaches am developing a HH routine of my own. Like anyone cares...<grin>.
