I did a search and found lots of great idea's for what to use to get the ash to stick but I have a bit of a different question. Sometimes we perform in places where fire is not the best idea (like kids parties) but I'd still like to do the effect, which brings me to my question. What other ash type material can a person use to reveal the prediction? I've thought about sugar/sweet and low, pepper but they just don't seem to be what I'm looking for. Any ideas on something to use that you don't need to burn or dig in an ashtry to get?

Now I know something useful to use my woofle dust for! I'd throw money if I could. Another idea that comes to mind would be to use regular ashes but bring them with you. Dump them out of a special vial and claim that they are ashes that you saved from a haunted house that burned down a while ago. Tell a story about how words and messages often appeared, mysteriously, on the walls of the house. By going this route, you can keep the exact same method as usual without getting into the idea that the ashs are from cigarettes or cigars...and...you have a reason for not burning anything on the spot. The only thing left to figure out is, what, besides your arm, would be a more appropriate way to spread the ash. Perhaps someone else has an idea?

Glitter, good idea and very colorful. I will give that a try and call it my magic dust. The haunted house idea is great. If you didn't want to spread the ash on your arm maybe prepare a piece of paper, or make up a dry erase board to look like a piece of the old wall from the house that burned, or spread the ash on a window pane from the old house. There is a routine in here somewhere just waiting to get out. Thanks for the ideas.

I just came up with an ending to the haunted house bit that makes some sense to me. The Magi could show a photograph of the old, delapidated (and haunted) house. Some of the ashes accidently spill on the photo...and...yikes!...the child of honors birthdate appears right on the photograph!!! This could be something that the child could keep as a rememberence. Another take on this would be to show some artifacts from the old house (haunted key) etc. Ghosts left their marks on these items, but the only way anyone can tell is through the use of black light. In the end, the child's birthdate shows up on a photo of the old house using the same process. (See the Zack Allen ebook "Black 7" for a couple of nice effects that provide details on this principle. Thanks Zack! The hair on my neck is beginning to stand up just thinking about this version.) Here, no ashes are used at all so everything is neat and tidy.
