Y'know, this could be an entire thread. "Busking in the 50 states, where is it legal, where is it not!"

I currently live in Phoenix, and the best I could reccommend would be downtown around the stadium before and after ball games. That or get permission from a movie theatre to perform for the people in their lines (outdoors and under misters in a number of places).
Phoenix, at least, is tough because people don't spend much of their time outside. The heat drives them to malls and theatres and there isn't much foot traffic at all. However, you don't have to have a permit to busk in Phoenix. If you want to perform in nearby Tempe, which has much more foot traffic, you have to apply for a permit. However, Tempe isn't at all a great venue. It's got a large college student population (with little money to spare) and traffic, traffic, traffic. If you have a mostly visual performance you can do okay there, but if you want to be heard it can be very difficult. In addition the restrictions on what is permissible are quite severe. I was told I could juggle clubs, as they're a traditional prop, but not tennis racquets, as one might go flying and hit somebody. (I didn't even bother mentioning torches or knives). I wish I had more cheerful news of busking in AZ, but what I have found is less than ideal. One time and place that IS really good is in downtown Phoenix on the first Friday of every month. On First Fridays, thirty or forty art gallerys have shows that are free to the public, and for that one evening there are huge crowds on foot. They even have a bit of money to burn, and the cops are leniant. There are regular fire performances and bands playing in the open air, and all sorts of cool stuff. It's a younger crowd, and one with a lot of artsy magician sorts, so they're really fun to perform for. Lots of energy and enthusiasm, and people who have time to stop and enjoy a show. Plus the galleries that arrange First Fridays are very welcoming to street performers and would sooner invite them then run them off. |

Good news is, apparently the license is free. I have an appointment on 8/20 to appear before the licensing board and apply for one. I'll keep you posted.

The very best place in Phoenix for me was in front of Alice Cooper's Town by Bank One Ballpark. I was eventually hired to perform between band sets on Fridays and Saturdays until I left town.
I also spent some afternoons about 1 & 1/2 hours before Diamondback's games right next to the guy playing the sax on the corner close to America West Arena. I was never told to move along by the "authorities". Phoenix is a busker friendly town! A decent place for me was in front of The Paisley Violin on friday nights. After the art gallery viewings closed many folks headed there. During the Arizona State Fair I never had any problems busking in the lots and on the fair grounds. During the spring I spent many afternoons at All America Park in Tempe. The greater Phoenix Metro area has so many places to get some decent hats. The heat has nothing to do with getting a crowd for a few minutes! |

I couldn't imagine busking in Arizona. When I lived there I nearly died of heat stroke!

I agree Chris! It turned me into a Vamp, but I never was at risk of heat stroke! Please note, I will return to the Valley later this year for a spell of time!
If you give me your contact information I will look you up and share with you a little hidden community of magicians in the Greater Phoenix Metro area....a sort of underground magic scene of Brothers! Fraternally,~r2 |

Busking has such a strange sound to it and it is almost unpleasant to pronounce.
What is the root origin of this name?

According to dictionary.com
Busker is from busk, "to seek to entertain by singing and dancing," probably from Spanish buscar, "to seek." kOnO
It is a lot easier to get older than it is to get wiser.

Of course it is always the obvious - the dictionary!
Thanks, kOnO

Hmmm, my wife was in Arizona for a golf/tennis tournament. She commented that it got downright cold at night while it was in the +90s during the day.

I lived there for five years and in Yuma for 4. 90 degrees in august??? MMMmmm. Must have been a cloudy day. Summer highs are normally 105 to 115 (or higher)and only 10 to 20 degrees cooler at night.
I saw a great show about a year back on Mill Avenue (Tempe) by the theater. The performer juggled knives and torches! It was also the first time I saw someone perform Deans Box (which led me to buy it). I tipped the guy 10 bucks. He used my grandson for part of the act. I now live in the Mojave desert where we do have about a 30-40 degree swing. Its Great. 105 in daytime and 70 at night!!! No Mosquitos! |

Eventually someone will probably take the time to develop a list of where it is/isn't legal in all 50 states.
Guess the best advice is to check with city hall, no matter where you're planning on trying. Another problem is that Cities change local laws, rules, etc. at the whim of their elected leaders, so I guess that even if a book was published, it would be out of date before it even went to print. |

I did a couple of tricks and they signed a license that gives me permission to perform magic in Providence. However, the license is pretty toothless. They told me that if I was asked to move by any merchants I would have to comply and the license itself says; "at the discretion of the police," which I assume means any police officer can ask me to move on and I would have to comply again. (On the up side, I assume I could not be arrested for loitering or performing without a license.) One other thing. The license clearly states that the permit to perform is on the grounds of "no solicitation," which means, I imagine, I would have to have a "passive hat" leaving it on the ground and hoping fo the best. The license is only good for Providence, I don't know what the details are on any other city. (I would imagine Newport would be the only other big place to work in RI, but there are smaller tourist towns in the state.

Does anyone know if it's legal to busk in Las Vegas? Thinking of heading out there this year.
