What can you do to become a real magician with coins?
Well, you learn coin magic and you can do that in a number of ways; books, videos or dvd's and formally with a teacher/student relationship with other magicians or informally with members of magic clubs. You may check your telepone book for magic shops near you for resouces mentioned above, including magic clubs and organizations. The internet is a great resource. Check out the forums for dealers and links to sites. Google will also help. For books I would start with Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic because in addition to coins it will expose you to the world of magic. Good luck! Ed Gilmore |

There are a number of "impromptu" type effects that you should learn that can be done on the fly for situations like you mentioned. Copper/silver transpos in the spectators hand can be done with a penny and dime (for example). Or, just make sure before you mention you are magician you have some coins on you ready for action. If you go out with friends, expect the same scenario. Be prepared, practice, get serious.

"On The Spot", a DVD by Gregory Wilson has lots of cool ideas for impromptu magic with all kinds of things you'll find in your pocket, including coins.
I think you'll enjoy a coin transposition effect he calls "a questionalble trick". It uses a dime and a penny. It also uses one of the the easiest coin "concealments" or ways to palm a coin, which is the "thumb palm". Besides involving two of the most basic coin sleights, it also has some built in mis-dirction that's quite wonderful. JJ Bobo's book, Modern Coin Magic is also a good place to start. In that book, there is a lifetime of study. When I started out, a book called "now you see it, now you don't" has easy illustrations and suggestions for basic sleight of hand. I love coin magic because coins are everywhere. Once you start doing coin magic, you will never see coins in the same way again. Anytime I find a new coin, foreign or domestic, the first thing I start doing is see how it fits into all my various coin moves. Start reading Bobo and start handling coins, and soon you'll have a pocket full of miracles with just a pocket of small change.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

You may already know this, but: "La prestidigitation sans appareils" by Camille Gaultier is one of the great magic books of all time. It's huge (~500 pages), contains lots of coin magic (among other types), and it's in French (which I guess if you live in Tours should be no problem for you!)

Well, coin magic has been arround for quite a while, and there are so many different things you could get into, but either way you are going to need the basic skills. Get the "complete introduction to coin magic," by Mike Ammar (it teaches you transfers false transfers, palms, ect.). But the guys above me are right. Always have some coins in your pocket, and practice infront of a mirror. And soon you will be on your way to being a Coin Magician. Oh, and listen the guys on this forum, most of them know what their talking about. except for me.

Nobody's said it yet. Get Scotch and Soda. I know - it's a gimmick, but don't completely ignore gimmicks. This one will free you to think of imaginative things to do. Don't stop with just the instructions. Expand your mind. Where can you put that Centavo and how can you get it there? Then, as you are learning sleights with coins add them to Scotch and Soda.
For me Scotch and Soda is training wheels for a coin magician. Let's him know what it feels like riding while he's learning his balance. |

I agree with Rikbrooks. When I started out, I hated Scotch & Soda. I didn't like the idea of having to use gimmicks. But, after I began learning strictly sleight of hand, I came back to it and found how AMAZING you can make it if you have any foundation at all in coin magic.
Also, while on the subject of gimmicks, most laypeople that I know expect some kind of gimmick and will want to examine everything. You want to really knock their socks off? Do it with THEIR coins! |

Go to http://www.magician.org/LocalRings/france.htm and you will find local IBM rings where you can find other magicians locally. There is a ring in Nantes, Nice and Paris. Although I realize it would be quite a trip I can't find anything closer. You could also try finding magicians in your area who advertise and become friends with them. You should also hunt around and see if you have a local magic shop, there you may be able to get private lessons. That is how I started doing coin magic decades ago.

Lets get Sewious.
Things that popped into this nearly normal brain. Coin magic can be done with things like, stones, washers, checkers, or even coins from someone elses pants. Be sure to turn the washer off before doing "coin magic". (mini lol- actually the washers you get at the hardware store..... I call mine Brain Washers....... Look for a coin and don't find one. (Actually get it out C.P. while getting another prop....rubber band , deck of cards... Do the other routine then Produce a coin and go into a 1 coin flurry/routine. Harris

Hey, you should keep at least one half dollar always in your wallet.

el toro Veteran user Across the atlantic 325 Posts |
I am not sure a half dollar is the answer if he is living in France. A 2 Euro would be better, and by the way it doesn't look very impromptu with a half dollar in the US either. They must be very rare by now !

Thank you everybody for your advices!! now I think I would have 50 cents and some others things always in my pocket!!! by the way 'el toro', in my opinion 2 euros is not very practical because this piece is very small and large! I prefer 50 cents!
