Having enjoyed the posts in the Silk forum about "how much is too much" in the way of a silk production, reminded me of how often we actually depend on the assistant and the assistant's reaction to make a production entertaining.
Specifically in the silk forum, the discussion got into the technique of covering up the young assistant with so many silks that it really had them hanging everywhere. But we also produce funny hats, funny animals, cartoon silks, etc. that depend on the assistant really making it work for the audience. Routinely when we ask someone to reach into a bag we add something like, "You aren't afraid of black widow spiders are you?" We are entertaining with the reaction of the assistant. How do you use young assistants in this way to really carry off an entertaining bit in a production trick? Bob Magic By Sander |

In my shows what ever the trick the helper always gets the credit for the magic happening, they wave the wand etc and when it's time for the final production I build the kids up to clap & cheer if the helper has done something special. Then if it's in any way possible it's the helper that removes or reveals the successful climax to to trick. If I remove it it's then given to the helper to hold up and take a bow.

I've also been doing that for a while now myself and find it works very well for me as well. Basically when I try to perform the "Magic", I sometimes make it obvious to all the kids that I don't really have any magical powers. However when the kids do the same actions as me, the magic really happens. Garners a great response for me here in this part of the world.
