Looking to add a linking borrowed finger ring routine and I just wonder if there are alternatives to the Himber Ring, or is that the only one?

Thanks Larry,

Yup, there's an excellent linking finger ring routine using a Himber ring on Osterlind's DVD. You might also check the Joe Stevens' [i]Himber Rings Teach In[i] DVD or video. Good luck.

The instructions with our Ghostly Linking Finger Ring include a new way routine that is soooo easy, and one seldom seen, a fantastic routine from the archives of AL KORAN (courtesy Martin Breese).

I recently looked at the Steven's video on the linking finger rings and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed.
I felt the Billy McComb routine to be the best on the video but in all honesty, I wasn't that impressed. The Pete Biro portion, while the shortest piece, was, in my opinion, worth the price of the video. The Karrel Fox routine had some interesting points, assuming that you are lucky enough to find a member of the audience who happens to have a pen in his/her pocket. This one aspect made, again, in my opinion, this portion not usable. I was very disappointed in the Ted Lesley routine since I have seen him perform his ring routine in the parlor at the Magic Castle. On the video he was fumbling with the rings like crazy and he kept going to his pockets. He did it much more smoothly in the live act. The Pendragon routine is completely worthless unless you want to use a stooge. In which case, I don't think someone would need a video to teach a routine. All in all, there are a few little points to be gained from the video but I have to say that I'm glad I didn't buy it new. It just wasn't worth it. Howard PS. I felt that the routine on the J.J. Sanvert DVD to be better than any that I saw on the Stevens video even without the finale that he uses.

I thought the Stevens video was worthless too. They ALL fumbled with the ring. I do think Joe Porper's is the best and combining it with his wonderful pencil and Al Koran's finish, the routine is hard to beat. The Porper ring really does make the work much easier so there's no squinting, fumbling and overhandling as they all did in the video. Pete Biro's idea on the videotape is excellent, however that was made pre-Porper, and I do think the pencil is better and more practical.
I think I mentioned a long time ago that Porper's Cylinder and Coins inspired me to finally create and master a routine for that effect and I now perform it regularly in my real world close-up shows. Previously, I had only played with the original Ramsay work and showed it to a few magicians occasionally. The same goes for his Himber Ring. I never performed it (played with it alot, though,) until I got the Porper model. Now, it is a staple in my work. |

Bruce Kalver has a nice DVD with some interesting ideas and performance tips.
If you have not seen it, I do suggest you get a copy and take a look. And Bruce does have the linking of ungimmicked rings on his DVD, If I remember correctly, as well as a nice update on Koran's routine. Tony |

Of all the routines listed on this page, which routine would be the cleanest. Can anyone suggest which would be the best DVD to purchase on the Himber Ring?

Howard:
I have probably seen Ted do the linking finger rings more often than you have. I have seen him do them at La Vie en Rose in Berlin 5 times and in live performance over here 4 times. The routine as he did it on the DVD was exactly the same as the one he always does. The problem was this. Ted appeared to be shuffling around, because he WAS shuffling around. Ted has Parkinson's. When he did that video, he was on a medication that did not work properly. I took him to a specialist in Houston and had his meds changed. This made things a lot better for him.

Having invented the ring Porper makes I am prejudiced for sure... but the reason I designed this ring was I found ALL THE OTHERS too hard to handle. The pencil was given to me by Al Koran and I kept it quiet for maybe 20 years. I created the way to do it on the Stevens tape to LOOK like what Koran's pencil did, but now that we decided to release it, IMHO there is no easier, stronger way to do the linking finger rings.

I have to say that the pencil that comes with the Ghost ring is one of the neatest things on the market. The Ghost ring is very nice, too.

Mr Biro & Palmer,
Perhaps this has been addressed before, but I'm confused about the Koran Pencil. The two rings should be at right angles to each other if really linked, but the Koran pencil has them hanging parallel to each other. Is this discrepency not noticed? Or am I not understanding an important point? Eric |

It isn't noticed. You should see the STANDING OVATIONS Bruce Cervon gets using this.

Apologies to Mr. Krause, but, although his ring looks really nice, it doesn't look like any ring I've ever borrowed for the effect. I think you want a Himber ring that looks like a "normal" ring, that is to say when it is switched in it shgould go unnoticed. I've beeen using the Proper ring and pencil since it was released and it is the finest version I've worked with. It workes differently than the others and makes the handling easier. If you want to see it in action, I perform and teach my routine on Vol. 2 of the Master Works of Conjuring set.

Hi Marc
No apologies necessary. I like using a ring that looks like a designer ring. I also hand them out. I wanted an ultra deceptive one so that is why I designed this. It is yet another option. I also sell an ungimmicked version to the public. Max

Been doing this effect for years...collected every method I could possible find in print or video...Marc DeSouza's is the best published version out there...IMHO.
Just do it 'slow' so you get all the wonderful displays that Marc's routine allows for. The L&L video angels weren't that great during the actual live peformence so some of these wonderful displays were not captured in the live performance...but trust me...the routine is as near perfect as you could want... Hey Cody,
Thanks for the nice comments. I too went through every version that has been in print or on video. I feel lucky that Tim Conover shared with me his routine and allowed me to explain a his move. I tried to piece together the best of what's been out there and come up with, for me, is the ultimate version. BTW, my friend Nick Einhorn from the UK has a great concept for the LFR that is "out of the box"...worth checking out. Marc |
