Yep, if you can't bob and weave with your effects and your performances, you are going to have trouble on the street.
I agree with Danny (as usual) those certain circumstances are the ones you really need to be prepared for so that you can "Laugh them off with a line" so they don't end up as dull thuds in your act. I drop something; I say "Ooops a sudden burst of gravity" I mess up a card trick; I say "I just washed my hands and I cant do a thing with them!" They forget their card, I say "Was that your card?" They say "No, or I don't know." I lean over and forcefully say; "Say it is!", and after a few times of telling them to say it is, with winks, and playing to the audience, the finally say it is.And it funnier than if they remmebered their card in the first place. And on we go... It all gets a laugh, or a groan, but either way, we all laugh right on to the next one. "Oh, so you thought that was funny? Well wait until you see this!" For me it all about everyone having a good time, and I really don't ever take myself all that seriously when I am performing, but for effect, I can go from dead pan serious to a sight gag in a heart beat. And I do that to keep boredom out of things for me and them. And I don't know of anyone on the street who is really successful with an "I am so cool attitude". That seems too much to be a separatist attitude, and the ones I have seen that are successful are the inclusionary ones. BroDavid

I like Gazzo's line "If I was that good, you think I'd be here?

I have got to stop reading this, Brian's wife again. Screaming, jumping up and down, screaming some more. Even in a crowd it will get attention and usually stop anything from happening. I have had people steal out of my bucket, hug and kiss all over me, even other entertainers! Stop me where I couldn't keep up with the people I was with. Koz, actually rescued me last new Year's Eve, in New Orleans. I have to trade up the pitch as you guys say. So I walk a big circle, I have had the drunks and the professional drunks follow me around. As long as I stay where people can see me I am safe. Helps to befriend the store keeps and the other entertainers. Even if we all are competing for the same dollar, we all seem to stick together. Just don't be stupid and walk around in the dark with a big wad flashing in your pocket or bucket in my case.
I have no idea how I would react if someone ****ed on me. I am surprised the crowd didn't turn on him. Toting a gun or a big knife, in my humble opinion, is stupid not to mention illegal? I did punch a guy in the mouth once for pulling my wig off. Floored him too! His friends called him a wuss and he was carted out. I guess it is probably different for a woman than a man, even tho we are more vunerable. Brian is 6'4 and weighs in around 230 so people don't really mess with him. So safety conscience too. I never really thought about it that much till I read this. Just have fun be aware of your surrounds and try not to take yourself to seriously. |

Hi, MY name is Tarquin Churchwell. I was born and raised in Portsmouth, NH. I was one of the first to street perform magic in Portsmouth I think because I never seen anyone before me do it. I performed at all the festivals and performed at Prescot Park and at local resteraunts. Even Vallies in Kittery Maine. This was in the 70's and early 80's and I seemed to be the only magician from Portsmouth. The only competion I had then was a magician named BJ Hickman. A magician who was also a radio personality. I felt really lucky back then. I had cornered the market on Pease Air Force Base. But I moved on. I moved from Portsmouth to Ma. then on to New York City in the early 90's and I am still in NYC. Glad to see Portsmouth is still active in letting street performers perform.

To Mandrake:
The wallet is mainly for pickpockets & sticky-fingered snatchers, which is the main way it's done in many Eurocountries. I won't mention any specific groups (*coughing* "The GYPSIES!!) but it's usually 2 working together, and one will distract you by spilling something, crying as though hurt, handing you a baby (no kidding!) or flashing their breasts....while the other lifts your wallet, or just grabs & runs with it. The pickpockets aren't looking for a confrontation of any sort, and believe me, they're cowards at heart. In all my times over there, no one ever actually tried to simply demand or take my wallet up-front & in my face, though there was this one time (in Frankfurt) when a lovely lady invited me to sit with her in a restaraunt booth, and then refused to get up & let me out of the booth until I paid for her (alreday consumed) tab & check! What was I suppoded to do? Physically FORCE a pretty girl out of my way? I was trapped, neatly & completely. Her meal was paid for, then she gave me a quick smooch, and left laughing! If someone (a man that is) ever tried to forcibly take my wallet....there would be a scene, and it would be ugly.....the first adjective in my username isn't just for laughs!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I was not familiar with the area (my regular spot had construction being done), but found a bunch of people sitting in what looked like a park. At the end of the show and very little money and trying to keep some of the spectators from taking the props and the money, I realized it was an unemployment office. Some fun. Good experience for the future.

My worst experience... hmmm...
I grabbed my cards. I started off with a spelling trick. Some people started to leave so I stopped and did a trick with lots of piles. I counted off the whole deck. Then I tried to do Ammar's card to ceiling but I realized I was outside. Oh well. Then I decided I better do JC Wagner's Super Closer. Everybody left but one person. So, I did my own version of Out of this World where I use 5 decks. It's a lot better than the original but maybe I didn't practice that day. I was too busy searching the web for Black Tiger decks and pink and blue Valentines decks xoxoxoxoxox I'm really great but can anyone help me. What are the best 5 tricks to do on the street? Once I know the top 5, I'll just do those and I'll automatically be good for sure. All I need to know are those 5 tricks and I'll have it made.

I'm glad I can read this after a couple of years and laugh. I especially like the One_Liners Danny Hustle gave me at the beginning of this thread. Well to another Summer ... Cheers, Ed, (Eddini).
