Hi there everyone,
I am looking at performing snow storm in china by standing on a giant fan (6ft span) or a specially designed platform which has fans which may be visible to the audience (theres no need to hide it). I just wanna know if I perform the snow storm on such a fan with a moderately adjusted speed. Will the illusion look impressive. Or will the snow flakes be blown visually and carry far ? another idea is to have these antique looking aluminium fans which look interesting my themselves. There will be about 4 to 5 fans arranged hapazardly around the performer as a thing of art. And these fans will blow the flakes. Will my ideas work. I basically don't want to use the chinese handheld fan. And want to make this look modernistic and large. Any help will be greatly appreciated. you can also pm me any ideas. Thanks in advance guys. |

Plainman,
It all comes down to presentation. If you have a good presentation to sell the trick. Go for it. First set everything up. Video tape your performance and look at it. See what needs to be changed and be critical about it. You want it to be the best. Then decide if it ready to be audience tested. That is the major test to see if it is good or if it fails. Mess with the angles of the fans to create the flakes to go all over the place. Have fun with it per say. Just one thing to add. Since you are useing paper. A warning it will be a mess to clean up. I think that's a really cool idea, but you said you wanted it to look "modern" and sorry to say but old antique chinese fans don't look modern, they kinda look cheesy, try to think of a different approach

Hi Bodidly, Thanks !! (I think that's a really cool idea, but you said you wanted it to look "modern" and sorry to say but old antique chinese fans don't look modern)Yes, as zombie boy said, I'm talking real fans like industrial looking fans. And those cute looking victorian fans which are table top models and look oh so elegant and with their polished aluminium blades. In fact I should admit being inspired by this playboy model who's standing in the nude with these fans blowing her hair upwards in the wind. Looked so cool. I thought why not perform snow storm like that. I mean with clothes on of course. LOL. But you should see how good those fans looked in the photo shoot. Which is when I realized...those fans do lend themselves very well to photo shoots and stage props. And they will serve the purpose of blowing the flakes well better than a chinese fan in your hand.

The force of a fan that large might be too much, even if run at slow speed. You might end up not even seeing the snow, or, having to use a lot more to get the same effect. Another problem you might get is that the snow will be forced up so quickly that the audience will only see it as it falls back down, which may, or may not, be the effect you want. As mentioned earlier, video tape it alone first. Good Luck... (actually I'd like to see the effect myself, sounds interesting)

Hi DrBob,
Actually you are right in that it will be too forceful. But the plan I have doesn't have to have a big fan under me. Its only an addition. What I basically wanted was more props to add to the routine as opposed to the dry effect it is because there's nothing much on stage around you to support the effect as a visual entity. I may disregard the bottom fan and go entirely with table top fans but of the nice slightly back dated style. Those shiny aluminiumised blades and black cages. The lincoln times type. |

I like your approach. I like the look and the feel that you are going for. Very modern, very industrial.
In the past, the magical part of that illusion was that wet pieces of paper blew out of the magicians hands as dry pieces. It looks beautiful, but it isn't a big audience fooler. By displaying the fans, it takes away the wonder as to how the paper is being animated, so maybe you want to introduce another "magical angle" on the effect. Such as starting off with something other than traditional white paper. Reza http://www.magicreza.com |

This fan thing sounds a bit like DC's. He had some fans around him also. Try to think of something else to use to blow the snow.
A jumbo card perhaps, or even a jumbo card fan? Other articles come to mind. Johnny Mystic

Hi,
Your jumbo fan should be fine. Use your body/hand relationship to control the effect. Also if it is too fast, get your electrician to fit a rheostat. Paula

Yeah, thanks guys. Thanks, Reza. I'm glad you like my idea. Thanks, Paula, too.
Johnny come on. Be realistic. DC used a fan (that too not sure) LOL. Pal, if we are gonna say DC used a fan then I shouldn't. Then DC used has hands. I shouldn't. DC uses lights in his show. We shouldn't. DC wears black. We shouldn't. DC WEARS CLOTHES. Oops let's be different. Hey, there are limits to idolizing someone. Heck, he can sue me for using a fan. And I'm sure I have equally good lawyers to defend and sue back for harassment and for wanton cause of mental agony. LOL. By the way I love the guys style myself. But I don't think we owe everything that we come up with to him. Did you know when Edison invented the bulb? There were more than a dozen guys all over the globe working on a similar idea at the exact same time. The super conscious mind, buddy. Its all up there. |

I know...I hope you find one. And if you find a store where they have two pieces don't you forget to message me. LOL. The entire law thing was more of in a light hearted sense. But come on we cant restrict ourselves too much right ?
