I constructed a busking/close-up table to do cups and balls and card work. I have a layer of thin rubber matting on top and want to cover it with material from a fabric store. I tried acrylic felt, which was nice, but started piling and leaving small fibers on the cards within a week. I thought about wool felt, but worry that it has the same problem. I ended up covering it with a canvas-like material, which is not great for the card work. It is OK. I also looked at some upholstery samples, but was, again, unsure.
If anyone has some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Have you tried a velvet or velveteen material...I have also used the material bought in auto motive stores that covers the inside of car trunks and other type sufaces...kinda fuzzy..but does not wear out easily.

The "car trunk" material is similar to the type of material used to cover P.A. speakers and moniters. I think it is called Ozite. I have seen it in both gray and black colors. It may even be the same stuff, but I'm not sure.

Thanks.
Do these materials pill or leave little particles on the cards? I found that was happening with felt. I noticed it when I spread the cards. It was like sprinkling sand on them.

I covered my close-up table with black velvet, so I agree with mdspark's advice. I had padding under the velvet, for the top surface. It comes in other colours, as well.

Chris,
Try pool table felt. It comes in several grades and colors. Kregg

I have a close-up table with a velvet fabric. It is very nice. I think PA speaker material would be horrible, personally.
My next effort will be a suede tabletop. Should last forever. I'm going to do this quite soon. Frank

I agree with cregg, I do a lot of work in pool halls, both magic and artistic pool shots so a pool table is my normal table to work on and it works better than my close up pad (except for it's not soft) and it doesn't attract lint.

Where can one buy pool table fabric, and is it expensive?

Well I went with a dark green, almost black velvet with a quarter inch thick foam pad. Just like having a really big close up pad. I think, though, that I will cut a second plywood top and put some sturdier fabric on it for outside work (where there is a chance of rain.)
It cost 12 bucks a yard and it is nice. Thanks for all the help, everyone.
