I am having a problem with some basic moves. Books are not my thing, I learn better with videos.
I have checked out a few videos and I am pretty good with double lifts, false shuffles and that's about it. Could anyone help me figure out what is best in learning some other sleights, etc.. Thanks, Chris |

Have a look at the thread titled 'magic books and videos for beginners', I found it really useful. Otherwise do a search (top right hand corner of the screen) as there are already a few threads on it. Good luck!,

For beginners I suggest you get
Crash Course 1 from http://www.ellusionist.com if you want a jumpstart in card magic. If you want a thorough teaching, go for Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights volumes in http://www.foolerdoolers.com/home.asp :) |

Ok.. I did try Ellusionist, pretty good video "inside magic"
Daryl has a good set, I have watched vol one of his Card stuff. I would like hands on help, it's just hard finding a magician that is not working and busy. ;- |

Encyclopedia of Card Sleights is amazing, you will find the basics an a lot of advanced stuff, is has everything you need and Daryl is a good teacher. If you want a jog, he'll teach you a lot of ways, and you can choose wich one you like the most.
And I think you should change your mind about books, at least consider some, there are really great stuff |

I agree - despite ellusionist-bashing about Brad previously not crediting sources, or appearing to wear eye shadow and having ugly girls undulating meaninglessly in vids, he does a couple of things well: Teaches moves and tricks very very slowly from multiple angles. I really like Oz Pealman's Born To Perform which gives you the controls, flourishes and tricks, but usually these aren't over-the-shoulder shots. Very good. That and ellusionist's Crash Course 1. And Steven Youell's double CD on lybrary.com. Daryl's stuff is too fast and too polished usually, he has so much ground to cover.
I also highly recommend Cassford's Pass With Care. For when you are itching for something new to look at, youdomagic has sleight downloads, as does penguinmagic's instantdownloads and Dante King. David Kenny posted a large amount of links on the Ultimate Magic Network. I'd put a link to that, but not knowing how long that will stay, I'm pasting his post here. I don't know if this is his own compilation or what. Wow!! That is a ton of links. It looks like I have some surfing to do. It's always helpful for me to read multiple descriptions on how to perform a particular sleigt. One description may not help at all while another one provides that one secret technique that makes all the difference in the world.

You want hands on, the best place is a local magic club, even if you have to travel a bit to get to it. Second best is lectures. All card moves and sleights take time to learn and lots of practice. You may be doing them correctly, just need more practice. Videos like Daryl's or Harry Lorayne's all teach good card sleights and teach them well. Jeff McBride has good videos too.

I agree with photius, Try to get into a local magic club and talk to the guys. Many will help you with things like slieghts. I have been a part of the IBM for just a short time and have alreayd recieved tons of help with reccomendations on sleights I use and for effects that I have been working on and some of my own.
