I bought some silver cascade coils from my dealer so I could use them in the show I'm doing two days from now. Although he assured me I could just use them from my bare hand, they turned out to be coil pan refills. I tried using one from a toothpick, but it won't flow by itself until it is almost to the end. Does anyone know a way I can get by with them for this show until I obtain a coil pan?

What an idiot - I discovered through trial and error that I am supposed to hold the coils parallel to the ground. That makes things easier; I'll just make a holder.

How do you make a holder and how do you rewind them?

When I used them in the past, I rewound the coil using an electric drill. Today, I'd probably try a power screwdriver or dremel tool.

Well, I figure all you basically need for the holder is a post (for the coil to go on) attached to a plate you can easily palm. My plans are to make it out of some old magic gimmicks that I don't use (the smoking thumb and fire from fingertips). I will put a couple of the metal parts that go around your fingers on the back of the plate to make it easy to grab with your fingers. Plus, they are already flesh colored!

Thanks Gordon and Screenman. I've been thinking about getting 1 or 2 of these.
When it uncoils, does it start from the inside part of the roll or the outside of the roll? Regan

Klamm of Klamm magic makes them of various sizes and with rewinders.
This has been on my think list for many many years. I think I may get one or more for both stage and close up work.(Smaller one for close up) Harris

It unfurls from the inside of the coil. This makes it very easy for you to retain it in a classic palm-like position.

A dime taped to the end (does make for a slighly larger bundle) has the weight to start the dopr,. then it just drops automatically after that. bob Klam told me the idea came from the metallic streamers used in WWII airplanes to confuse radar into thinking there were other planes in the area.

Fuki also uses mylar type streamers. His are very thin and float well when tossed out over the audience (ala kabuki streamers). He uses a modified battery drink mixers to rewind.

I've thought about making a winder out of something. There are so many little battery operated gadgets that are available nowadays that something should work well. Making a way to hold it would be the only difficult thing.

I use 150' of 1" wide coils in my act. It is contained within a cardboard tube with a slight lip made towards the inside. No ,it is not fancy, Cardboard and duct tape. But I have been using it steady for over 20 years.
To rewind the coils, you must first straighten out the entire coil as it twists as it cascades down. Since I am using 150' coil, I never do it at the show. I place it into a plastic bag and take home to do. Then I work about 20' from the end and smooth the twists out to the end. Then I do 40' in and so on until the entire coil is straightened. I use a wooden pencil with wooden disks or 3" tape to tape reels to rewind onto. I have metal lathe with a slow speed that I use to rewind into. I feed the coil into the pencil area with my fingers parallel to the pencil and coil going flat onto the pencil. At the end I slip a small rubber band ( use the proper size so you do not have to try to double it) to hold it in place. I also take a strip of filament (strapping) stape about 3"long and 3/8" wide. I place a piece on top and the bottom and sandwich the coil between it. I do this at both ends. This helps in the rewinding and in grabbing the end to start to coil. You can also place a small coin taped to the end to start the weighted coil cascading. I happen to use a red coil but I can also supply them in blue, gold, purple and some other colors. I have used a variable speed drill to also wind the coils up. The key is to straighten the twists out first.
