Are there any video/dvd of magic performance by reknown magicians. I'd like to see my idols in action, not just in a lecture tape.
This would be a great learning tool to study their timing, interaction with the public, etc.

Go for the new rising stars. I recommend the videos of Nate Staniforth and Cris Angel. Check it out. A new breed of performers.
good luck in magic! |

New is good, but I'm looking for "classic" performances. E.g. a collection where you could see the masters of all times (from Slydini to Tamariz) perform for laymen (TV appearance, shows, etc.).
You can find such clips scattered in all the commercial videos where you'll find performances + explanations. I often just watch an old tape for the performances while skipping the explanations. It would be cool for distributor to package all this footage into "performance only" tapes. Anything like this exists?

You can try getting the 'Great Magic of Las Vegas' and 'Great Magic of Las Vegas 2' dvds which are "performance only" dvds with performances from Jeff McBride, Lance Burton, Kevin James etc.
These dvds are really entertaining to watch! Worth every penny in my opinion.

The David Copperfield 'Illusions' DVD is all performance.
Theater, cinemas, and literature are all better forums for telling stories or creating drama. Stand-up comedy is better for telling jokes. But magic is unique in creating the Twilight Zone sense of turning a corner and finding yourself on another street, in another town, in another country. Deception is the means to that end. –John Bannon

I agree with euphoria, Illusion by David Copperfield is his compilation of acts at his best. I have it and it gives me inspiration when I watch it.

FEARLESS, by David Blaine. For people that don't like him, you still can learn things. like how to approach and perform. To each his own.

Denny and Lee has a stage show tape out. I think it goes for about $20.00. I see it pop up on his mailing list every once in a while. Hope this might be something you are looking for.

I rented Mysteries of Magic from Netflix, but they apparently don't have volume one (Masters of Mystery). The description for volume one and volume three (Death Defying Feats) seem to be reversed on the website. When I requested volume one, I got volume three (mislabeled as volume one). I thought perhaps I would get volume one when I requested volume three but, alas, they sent volume three (labeled correctly this time). I tried requesting volume one again and, again, received volume three mislabeled as volume one.
Has anyone else rented these DVDs from Netflix? Anyone actually get volume one? I'm just interested in watching this, not really in owning a copy. Plus, it's listed as $99 used on Amazon.com so that's not an option anyway. I checked my local library and local video rental stores, but they don't have it either (no surprise). Anyone know where I might find a copy at a reasonable price?

I remember getting and watching all 3 and I don't remember seeing anything twice, so I'm fairly sure I got all 3 different volumes. If you're still using Netflix, try getting volume 1 again. Perhaps you just got a single mislabeled disk and the others are actually what they're supposed to be. |

The new Albert Goshman Lecture DVD is a performance only DVD. It is about 40 minutes long with some wonderful, funny stuff in it. Well worth the money.

I am writing this on the assumption that posts about Blaine and Angel are referring to TV specials? If not.. skip to the next post..
I dare suggest that any reactions based on the showmanship techniques used for any magic that was filmed for TV are very artifiicial and unreaslistic. I like the new TV magician specials for several reasons but they are certainly the last thing I'd watch for lessons on how to do my magic shows or how to interact with real spectators at a paid performance. There are a lot of things magicians do early, during, and late in their shows for specific reasons. Things that tie the whole show together. These things are extremely important and completely left out (for obvious reasons) of a TV special. If your lessons on showmanship, trick selection, etc. come from TV specials, I fear you will be very misguided. Getting paid to do a strolling gig and walking around saying.. "look, look.. watch, watch" will not get you a repeat booking. Doing a standup show by saying.. "come up here. I'll pull your heart out. now I'll put it back. now I'll eat a bug. now I'll pull it out of my eye. now I'll float. hey, why is nobody clapping?" will also not get you a repeat booking. I'm not saying that any of the guys that do TV specials would actually do the same thing in their shows. It's just how it looks on TV and my opinion is that it is completely wrong for a professional performer. If you want to see great stuff look for videos of these (and many more) guys doing their live acts.: Harry Anderson John Carney Rich Marotta Simon Lovell Gazzo Lennart Green (FISM act) Jeff Hobson Phil Cass (shell game video) Osterlind (The Act) Here, if you study, you'll see what they do and why they do it, when they do it, how they do it.
