Hello MagicTad:
Another source is one of the Brad Burt video tapes. It's either "Basic Card Technique" or "Advanced Packet Trick Techniques". I may have the name wrong, but the title is something like that. Brad Burt is an excellent teacher. The video is mostly of his hands - he sits on a rolling chair and goes around the table to give you different views...over and over again. He shows every tiny, detail you'll need to master it. Really, it's as close as possible to having a private lesson with a pro. I've seen it for sale several times in the Video "buy and sell" section here at the Café. Ron |

Alex Elmsly's Tahoe Session Volume 1 teaches it. Gives some pretty good insights on it as well. Humm...

The Elmsley video is a good place to start if you want a video. And it comes with a nice collection of tricks.

The check points are sound that Giobbi offers. Ammar also teaches the Elmsley on ETMCM Volume 2.

The best I've ever seen doing the *Elmsley Count* is Fred Kaps!
The reason it was *best* was, that he didn't *hold* the cards stiffly and *on purpose/in a position* as most do, but the cards almost where *sliding* from one hand to the other by themselfes...not being pushed and taken...just floating over... To achieve this, one first has to do the Elmsley count the traditonal way, and by traditional I don't mean the standard way of holding the cards in the left hand by their left long edge, BUT having them in the left hands dealing position (almost mechanics grip),catching the upper right corner with the left middlefinger and use the left thumb to push the top card slightly to the left The right hand then can take over the rest/all of the cards and start counting from right hand to left hand.. Figure it out..IIRC Derek Dingle did it that way.. Therefrom -after you've learned the above- you have to loose *control* on the cards (almost), and the cards from the right hand should almost *float* to the left hand.. Figure it out.. it's the best way to do the Elsmley count..

Is the mechanics' grip really more natural? If you hand 4 cards to a person and say, "Count these," will they hold them deep in their palm, or at their fingertips? As someone who prefers to look like I'm handling cards in a casual, non-slick, everyday fashion, I'm not sure the deep grip looks like the way one would normally handle the cards. I think it's more deceptive, but the odd grip seems to call attention to itself.

It all depends on how it is handled..
I'm pretty sure, not many of the ppl frequenting this forum have ever seen Eddy Taytelbaum from Holland working, but nevertheless he is one of the greatest close-up card magicians ever, or IOW, one of the very best. Seing him doing the Hindu-shuffle , is seing a very unnatural grip, nevertheless it is accepted as maybe just being *showy* or unusual and he gets easily away with it. For a short explainion,he holds the deck gripped by his thumb and ringfinger and so both his forfinger and his middlefinger are on top of the deck.. The deck is not held -as usually done when doing the hindu-shuffle- from *above*, but rather at a right angle to the base of all fingers.. A variation which I did after seeing Eddy using that grip(around 1959!), is to hold the deck in the same position (NOT from above) but with the thumb and middlefinger at the sides, the middlefinger curled completey, toughing its own base.. The forefinger only is curled on top of the deck, not almost streched as usual when using the normal grip. This grip is entirely differnt then when the deck is held from above in the way magicians normally do that shuffle. It gives a much firmer grib on the cards, but it's hard to describe.. Anyway, I didn't want to be off topic, but Eddy also has a special grib when doing the Elsmsley count. The original way of holding the cards accordingly to when that count first was published in one of Dai Vernon small booklets (Inner/more inner secret of card magic)-or in Elmseys *Four card routine* - in the first place looks fair and natural, but the cards have to be *placed* in that position, whilst a count from the mechanics grip doesn't need any adjustment and one in any case does start EVERYTHING up by having the cards in that position in the left hand..to do the count the original way, one first has to place the cards between the tips of the fingers of the right hand...that's a delay..and a preparation, but I know a lot of other handling also do need repositioning of cards, but TBH I try to avaoid that if at all possible..that's *my* reason why I think the mech. grib is better to start with..

Did yo know that Eddy Taytelbaum, Holland was the first magician to perform the Elmsley count on the continenty. It was the year l955 Eddy started doing Elmsley Count.
Eddy won FISM Micromagie 1955 in Amsterdam and he won FISM Card magic 1958 in Vienna. He was a friend to the world famous dutch magician Fred Kaps. He is still going strong, he is almost 80 years. |

I have learn the emsley count by watching Micheal Ammar and I have to say that I'm really happy with that. Throught his videos, he shows two ways to do the Emsley count.

I know you said a dvd or tape but I wanted to mention a book too. Counts,Cuts,Moves and Subtlety by Jerry Mentzer has helped me a lot with my counts esp with the Elmsley. If you only want video instruction then Ammar does teach the Elmsley count good on Vol 2 of his Easy to Master series.
