I have noticed that many people get into magic as kids. The desire and singlemindedness that a child can possess creates the drive and desire to work on something until their eyes bleed and thus can create excellent capabilities in the magical arts.
This thread is not aimed at this magician. It is aimed at the magi like me, who came to magic later in life when the pressures of life weigh on our heads and often cause us to neglect such "things" as practice. What made you realise the value of practice? I have been a martial artist since 1988. Years of study and countless hours of continual practice ground into me the necessity of practice. Not just practice but perfect practice. Hours of drills, workouts in the snow to strengthen the resolve, push-ups on pavement to toughen the knuckles, and more hours of kata before learning "the good stuff", before I was deemed ready to learn. All of this just to learn that "the good stuff" was not contained in technique, but in the mind, in the spirit. Those valued treasures that are imparted to the advanced student are not ground breaking punches, they are mind bending subtleties. Subtleties that are useless without those hours and hours of drills and kata, those push-ups, that time out in the cold, frozen snow. So, back to the question. What taught YOU the value of practice?

As an obsessive-compulsive, I have found it one of my least harmful addictions.
Besides, after twenty-five years of constant practice on the pass, on occasion it can feel as though my hands have gone to heaven. |

I practice because when I have a deck of cards in my hand I love the feeling I get knowing that I can provide a moment of awe. Confidence can only come with experience and experience can only come from practice, and nothing feels better than the perfect sleight the first time you get it after all the practice.
