Yeah, Mind Wide Open is an interesting book, and Mr. Johnson a good writer.
Like most people I can 'encode' OK. It's just the 'sustaining' of anything in life that is the real challenge. However, perhaps the work of Jose Silva (Silva Mind Control)adds to this.

Speaking of books, I would highly recommend "The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark" by Carl Sagan. You can probably find it pretty cheap, used on half.com.
Sagan talks about how to distinguish between science and pseudo-science. And he's not just a naysayer: he debunked many known UFO sightings, but added that he believed that it was likely that intelligent life does exist outside of earth, and he would be more thrilled than anyone if aliens visited us. In other words, he's not just saying all of the UFO and paranormal stuff is bogus; he's saying that it's important to distinguish between what's real and what's imagined. He also discusses talking to the dead, faith healing, witchcraft, etc. It's my opinion that if someone really can read minds, they should be able to prove it (if they want to) using the scientific method. I'd like to see a psychic predict the weather every day for a month, and compare the forecasts with a designated weatherman. |

I'm always interested in debunking methods. They usually help me re-bunk things in my act.

What do you mean by re-bunking. Could you give an example?
Is that like when you get back in bed? |

It's when you learn the methods the fakes are using, which can be very cleaver and adapt their methods and psycology, even speach patterens to you voice to make yourself more convinceing and adding all that to your presentation.

If they do it it's bad but if you do it it's good? I know you're not a con artist but unless you tell your audience you're using pure trickery (which it is)what's the real difference? We both get a fat fee from the sitter/audience/client.

No super powers here, except I had intensive and long courses of "synergologie" (french!) somewhat translated to "body language", small details and very accurate, helps A LOT when performing (not as in stage or strolling, just perform for friends and friends of friends etc) helps me to determine the "weakest link" and most receptive person! from personal experience I do recommend everybody to have at least basic knowledge about it, X-con turned out to be a scary yet extremely touching "story" for a person...
Double posters should be shot!

I have a sixth sense. I know this because my mother told me so. Well, she didn't actually say that I had a sixth sense. What she said was that I showed no sign of any of the usual five.

Me: Synesthesias, extreme facility with language patterns, and one of the finest chameleon abilities I've ever encountered. I also get immediate impressions about things/people/places that are quite often correct, if not always useful.

Synesthesia is when parts of one sensory cortex "tickle" those adjacent to them. They are very common, but people like myself who have them to a greater degree are usually the only ones who are consciously aware of them.
The evidence for our human understanding of synesthesia is all around us- phrases like "warm colors" are examples of common synesthesias. FOr me, I feel images, see tastes, and hear feelings. I use these especially in my web site design work, so I'll give you an example from that realm- when I create a site, in order for me to feel that I have created the right image, I need to make the site so I get a feeling of smooth sweeping with a light breezy quality. There is also an audio component- if the site is too cluttered, I get a noisy sense from the site- I lok at it and hear jangly sounds in my head. People with synesthesia could probably also be nuts, but hey, it works for me! SO I design a visual thing to feel and sound a certain way to me. I don't always succeed, but when I do, the end result is acknowledged by most people as a superior product. Visual folks without synesthesia tend to say it has good balance, good color scheme, and just the right amount of "white space"- some just say it has "great formatting". Taste is interesting- when I taste certain foods, it creates a semi-internal visual image (sort of just barely perceptible in consciousness- difficult to "focus" on it). It's not an image of any *thing*, but it has a sense of shape to it- it's almost like a shape without substance, a hole in a void kind of thing- it's not easy to describe. There's also a color associated. I could go on with these all day, but the descriptions don't get much better. How does this work into magic? My presentational materials need to create the right feeling in me, so they have to look a certain way. An effect needs to go and look just right so I hear the right sounds. I know when I've created the proper effect in the observer when I hear the right tones in my head. Unfortunately, I don't hear them that often! If I perform an effect "not quite right", (for example- if I am doing an effect to point to something beyond the effect, and the observer goes away wondering "how he did it" -not my performance style target)- I hear a sound like a light buzzing dropping in pitch and fading. If I get it right on, having my exact intended effect on the observer, I hear an almost imperceptible high frequency whistle- almost like the old TVs that had the horizontal sync whistle- very, very, very high pitched. SO there's my synesthesia thing, at least some of it. Hope it was interesting to you! Dave |
