Hi all, I'm a card freak and have been for a few years now. I really love it with all my heart, but have started edging toward the mentalism side of magic.
I am really interested, but don't know where to start. I just bought Karl Fulves Self-Working Mental Magic, but I thought it was, well, a bit simple really. I have come to the conclusion that it is a "my first" type book (although there are some good card effects in there) I am after direction as to where to look and what to buy, so any help would be greatly appriciated.... just one more thing though, as I am only just starting in it please don't recommend things like "the worlds hardest to perform mentalism feats volumes 1-46" please! hahah thankyou all in advance play safe

Corrinda, Anneman and "Mind, Myth & Magic" by T.A.Waters for a really good overview of many possibilities. You may find that you're drawn to certain manifestations of mentalism more than others. When you do, you can then pursue information in the specific realm that interests you.

There have been many who have debated whether we should be characters or ourselves.
I find the term "act naturally" to be a bit of an oxymoron.

How come most of the effects taught in Osterlinds' Dvds do not require knowledge of much from 13 steps to mentalism?

Mr. Osterlin's EMMM Video Series recaps some of those mysteries as well as some of the other "classics" of Mentalism. We are talking about a very large area of study. I can assure you, Richard can probably point you to either of those books and help you see where the imeptus to some of his material came from... most of us that work in this stuff full time can. Then too, there are the "follow-up" or intermediary (sp) books such as Koran, Baker, Minch, Hull, Nelson, etc that are rarely mentioned. Believe it or not, at one point in time... about twenty years ago... much of what is found in Mind, Myth & Magic was scoffed at by "the establishment" and seen as fantasiful thoughts... I obtained my original copies of the booklets out of the $1.00 book barrel @ Hollwood Magick. It wasn't until "my generation" started putting T.A.s stuff into practice and proving to our elders that it could be used successfully, that the tome came into demand, got bound and is now heralded as one of the new "Bibles" to the trade... just one of the more "advanced" courses of study. We all need to learn how to walk before we can run... magician's tend to be impatient, they are used to a more instant mode of gratification... mentalism wont give you that. In the long run however, you end up getting much more from Mentalism than you typically will from traditional magic... at least, that's been my experience in the 41 years I've been involved with magic (I wasted the first four years of my life learning all that Toddler stuff...) |
