Does anyone know any information about Docc's latest offering? It's currently available at Murphy's Magic Supplies
"Learn how to become another person, know their secrets and deepest feelings even though these thoughts were never written, spoken or even shared! In this trick booklet, Docc explains a brand-new way of revealing information. No more torn billets, or extensive pre-show work. This effect is pure mentalism. The plans for an extensive, complete illusion with a levitation and vanish are included in this incredible little booklet. Docc explains it all, from tips on inexpensive lighting, to building a portable small stage set. "Information that is not written is revealed. "Absolutely no pre-show work. "No switching of billets. "No tearing or peeking of information. "No Carbons or pressing devices. No pumping, the guests are never asked anything "No assistants needed; it's a one-man operation. "No sleight of hand required. "Easy to do." |

I haven't seen this, but from what I know of Hilford's stuff is that you are in a blind gamble with his products. From my experience it will either be nowhere near what it is hyped up to be, or way better. I haven't gotten anything from Docc yet that has just been "so-so". I would suggest waiting for a review before you buy.

Sounds very interesting, though.

I would suggest the following advice be applied to any purchase in the Mentalism field.
Ask yourself why you really want it. The answer, if you are honest, should tell you all you know. If you have an instinct that it will fit right in with your act, then go for it. The same applies if you think you can adapt the principle in some way. If you just think it sounds cool and want to know how it's done, then forget it. Mentalism is an art, and the main part of that art lies in the presentation. From the comments on here and the amount of buying and reselling that goes on with stuff, I suspect that 90% of posters are mere secret seekers. There is certainly a lot to be said for acquiring as much information as you can, but I suggest that only be done if your budget is unlimited. Otherwise, get the classic books, get the techniques down pat, and work on your personality and presentation. I have a lot of Docc's stuff and have learnt a great deal from it. The man is an absolute master at reworking old classics. Take his ball and tube presentation for a terrific example. He is also pretty cool with new ideas too. His Perfect Mental Club act is awesome and was a key inspiration for Derren Brown. I suggest you not buy Docc's work to find out how it is done. Buy them to learn from. Regards, David. |

David you are right. But I think one thing most would be asking here (including myself) is there's mention of mindreading and cold reading and then suddenly in this "booklet" you get to learn something on levitation. Why the diversion? Well, of course, if it's the illusion of levitation without props including your own heel down there then it's something to look out for (at least for me).

A review is up. I know this is something I will be getting. Anything I've gotten from Docc is great.

Thanks !
Can you 'tell' the spectators more about themselves than just about their birthday aspects and their mother? |

The levitation part throws me; it sounds daft. And how can you find out this information if it's impromptu? These are the questions I would ask.

I can't see this being impromptu since you float over the audiences heads and then dissapear. But the rest of it sounds good for impromptu peices.

I don't think the whole act is impromptu - comments about lighting and staging seem to suggest otherwise. If you read the review it says that "if" you want to do this impromptu you'll need a technqiue like Dance of Shiva. No idea if you'll still do the same levitation or not.

Also sounds like the most interesting part of the methodology is USA only?

Ok I guess I don't link levitation with mentalism. But you have to ask yourself will you actually build a stage and carry it around with you?
It seems a bit daft to me. But perhaps that's just me.. Some of the audiences out there ...it would be a good idea if you could disappear.. |

The link from Jeff says that you can do this Impromtu, but you'll need to use a peek. But apparently they don't write down answers to questions that you respond to !

Hi guys,
Let me answer a few of your questions. Sludge: Yep, using a social security number is definitely one of the main phases of the routine and it most certainly is USA only. However, with some clever thinking, you could probably adapt something similar. Shrink (et.al): The main idea is a stage routine, but you don't have to use it that way. I, too, winced at that part of the description and was quite pleased that, upon reading it, discovered that it's not necessary to do the whole levitation/floating thing. In fact, that's in a separate section of the book. Mattisdx: As to the information question, what's revealed is listed in the blurb. However, with creativity, you can probably figure out how to get more info. As to your second concern, a few posts above, I can't really discuss the principles here, but suffice it to say that this is EXACTLY what the audience is supposed to think: that hardly anything was written down and that the mentalist picked up information that go much farther and is much more personal. I've definitely planted clues as to the methodology in my review without spelling them out, which I'm not going to do, but well-read mentalists should know what I'm talking about and be familiar with what's going on. -- Jheff
