I recently made some research on Talk to the Dead psychics.
I always looking for ways and angles to sharp my cold reading skills. I come up with a few conclusions about what not to say if you want to be accepted as real psychic. Don't ask questions. You should give information not get one. Don't say:"I don't know what that means".If you don't know who does? Don't say:"I'm getting an M or an L or a B or something...it could be Johny or Fred or..." to be continue... Yaniv Deautsch |

Thanks Jim... you took the words right out of my mouth (I can't stand people with such strong precognitive ability )
Yaniv... everything you just said "not to do" is what most all of them/us do. Yes, you do have a valid point in some of your observations but, there are also reasons why some of those phrases and "habits" happen (read Ian's Book! You'll find these same "rules" in books that go back before Nelson's time and it ain't changed!) If you take the time, and make the investment to actually attend Medium type work, you'll gain a potent education... same applies to the rules of being a Reader.

So, in the world of the skeptic, what you have are a bunch of ordinary guys who have successfully fooled the public into thinking they can read minds, talk to the dead, perform physical feats with PK powers, etc. These "ordinary guys" have to define in the eyes of the public what limitations are imposed on these particular powers. Over time, the public accepts these limitations as the hallmarks of legitimate "talents." (i.e. the sitter needs to be receptive, information comes to the psychic in a garbled or obscured form and requires clarification, readings go from general to the specific, etc.) Uri Gellar took something that could have very well become a bar sport, and turned into a test of psychic ability, and in doing so, has added a level of legitimacy to the method (and quite possibly prevented the feat from becoming a competition at frat parties). To deviate from these traditional limitations too severly would immediately bring certain suspicion to the method. To boldly and coldly relay information to a sitter without a certain amount of pumping would cross a fine line between reading one's mind and invading someone's privacy. To suddenly become airborne in Central Park would too be too wild of a deviation from what the public expects from psi ability to be taken as elaborate trickery, or very very scary. I'm not saying that there's no room for improvement, or more fantastic illusions. But I don't think the public is ready for someone reading a mind like a copy of People magazine. |

And as they tell others, it gets bigger, too. You may be giving the average person too much credit for what they remember from a mentalist routine, and cold reading, or a cups and balls routine, for that matter. WE remember every detail when we see another person in our field in action. But we are set up to remember it because we are already familiar with all of the details. Because no one can read minds (at least in the direct way portrayed in movies or on TV shows over the years), then we need to come up with "limitations" as to why things aren't so direct. But 20 minutes later, those limitations are long forgotten, while the effect still leaves them stunned. So what Yaniv has said has much validity, but is overkill, unless you are performing for James Randi. Just my 2¢ (how much is that in British pounds?) Dave |

>So what Yaniv has said has much validity, but is overkill, unless you are performing for James Randi. <
Who, in his earlier days, was telling the world of his own psychic abilities... Seems Mr. Randi's attitude against the shut-eye market stems from his own failure within said system, to become famous. Thus, he's settled for imfamy... (interesting though, considering how many involved in the skeptical society have the reputation for having failed as performers, shut-eye workers, and admit to being one's of "lost faith" in anything... ) Dave is correct in the fact that "People remember what they want to remember" about any kind of experience but especially encounters that hint at things spiritual and paranormal. Even the old timers in our field have explained this and how to exploit it to your advantage when it comes to PR. On the other hand, I have to sustain the issue of "giving people too much" and "Reading them as you would a magazine"... I'm known for being amazingly accurate in my Readings one-on-one and via long distance (sight unseen)... I've had people beg me to stop a Reading because I went in so deep and was drawing out "current" issues they didn't want to deal with. In other words, such a level of accuracy is dangerous and potentially damaging. No, Readers/Psychics cannot obtain that level of insight on everyone they meet. There are variables adn like anyone working in the counseling field will tell you, some people are simply more opened than others... something that "Scientific Conditions" can't (in the world of the skeptic "Wont") allow for... individuality and how that affects energy which effects manifestation (Hermetics 101)"Change the energy you change the manifestation." The definitions of Psi ability by the way, aren't what these "average guys" put out and outlined. They are described in the New Testiment as being "Gifts of the Spirit" (see the Day of Pentecost) and run in common with similar "spiritually oriented gifts" spoken of in other religions and cultures the world over. There is a global consistency to these definitions that has spanned thousands of years. On the issue of not being able to communicate with someone "Telepathically" I dare anyone that's been married or with the same person for more than two years to deny numerous occassions in which the two of you weren't having the same thoughts to take the same actions, etc. Granted, there's that classic skeptic's excuse of Coencidence... like I said, that's an excuse. In real esoteric traditions there is no such thing as an accident or coencidence. Rather, our denial of such things allow for the illusion thereof and thus, form a paradox that is, in all truth, a lie -- self-deception. I know from experience, it was testified by Nelson and others, that people who practice Muscle Reading over a number of years see a marked increase of this kind of non-contact understanding. Dave has pointed out elsewhere that cousins to his field of specialty have and are discovering and confirming things about the human mind and nature that run hauntingly close to the mystery we call the Paranormal. I'm not surprised. My contention has always been that a logical explanation exist behind all this but, TO HAVE AN EXPLANATION DOES NOT NEGATE THE MANIFESTATION. This is where the debate finds its impetus; either side ignoring the middle ground, where the truth around the issue exists. The EXOTERIC traditions of religion and lore intentionally reveal the fantasy behind which the truth is concealed. It is the way of the limited mind and mundane society. Regardless of which theological path you chose to look (including Christianity) there is an ESOTERIC side not openly shared outside its inner-sanctum e.g. it is reserved for the initiate -- an OCCULT knowledge. At one time (before greed and commercialism came into vogue) the secrets of how our illusions and tricks work fell into this same category... less than a century ago magicians were literally willing to kill off a competitor for stealing a trick. IN some parts of the world the young magicians can only perform the tricks that have been passed down in his family or taught him by a mentor... that's now, in the 21st century! There are places in this world, if you did the Sponge Balls and the community saw your "magick" as being stronger than that of the local shaman, you could very well be murdered by his henchmen for stealing his patrons. We are spoiled and perhaps a bit confused in the westernized world when it comes to this issue because of the seperation forced upon our culture by a corrupted and power-hungry cult formed a little under 2,000 years ago in Europe. The question is, when are we going to heal that wound and start seeing beyond the limits of technicality and excuse? I've strayed waaaaay off topic, but I hope what I've shared helps some of you to rethink some things when it comes to this issue. I'm not saying there aren't crooks and charlatans out there misusing our technology, I'm just saying we need to allow the door to remain open and recognize things for what they are vs. what we want them to be.

The mythology (popularized in 70's DIY classics on clairavoyance, telekinesis, and telepathy) suggests that these talents are dormant in most, and underdeveloped in those displaying these abilities. (And taking a more religious view towards these talents...the devil is the "Prince of Lies," so you can't expect someone who practices the satanic arts to be 100% accurate) I still think there would be a big difference in a client remembering a psychic reading them like a book and a client experiencing being read like a book. The only person I've ever seen pull off how a "real" mind reader would behave (under Yaniv's conditions) is the legendary Dick York. |

My suggestion is - go out to a fair ground or mall parking lot. Safely approach strangers and say you would like to give a brief psychic reading. Then do one - anyone, palmistry, cards, psychometry - spend a few moments, even tell them you are practicing developing the skill. Ask them what they think of the reading.
Don't tell them you have expereince in this area or that you are a mind reader or the world's greatest or any of that - for your own experimental purposes just go out and offer them some free readings. A beach anywhere people gather. Don't charge do this for your own learning. Do whatever you would normally do. Do what yaniv has suggested. Try a dozen different ways of giving out the info. Ask questions don't ask questions. But keep a record of how each reading went. After a couple dozen sit back and analyze what seemed to work. What did they people like, not like. What were the strong points the weak points etc. In other words find out by doing actual readiings. And you can do them incognito so there is no pressure on you to actually be a good reader. Some people will swear you walk on water - others will say they have had better. But do your own personal research - and when finished don't tell them it was research - just tell them you are practicing developing a talent and need to work with people. Most will let you and you will discover many useful things. BUT don't stand outside a psychic fair where people are charging for readings and then do them for free. Just like you wouldn't go to a magic or mind reading show and do effects in the line or lobby. Use common sense and don't alienate anyone. I suggest this becasue this is exactly how I started doing readings in the early seventies. I did them anywhere and everywhere. When I got enough confindence I then satrted doing the fairs and ultimately had my own practice. In doing scores of them you discover what the 'best' way is for you. What does and don't there are. Oh and for Christopher - there were exactly 271/2. Enjoy! Rex |

Rex,
Very good suggestions for learning cold reading. But about that 1/2 skeptic. Was he only partly skeptical, or was he just really short? --Christopher |

You can test lines and stock readings. You can make some up or combine with others. Its a good way to start developing a "psychic dictionary" if you like. Yu can even have cold reading booksi n front of you. And its safe way to begin. I learned how to integrate language patterns this way then moved on to real situations. Its just another opportunity to practice. |

I'm not sure if approaching strangers is a good idea. Most people are leery of being approached by someone they don't know, especially one who wants to give them a psychic reading. I'd rather have the people come to me.
Make it easy -- rent a booth at a flea market, set up a card table with a sign for your services, 2 chairs, pull out your cards/magnifying glass/tea cup/whatever, and get to work. Charge a nominal fee (say $10) and give them a ten minute reading. You'll learn a lot and make a little cash for your time. And definitely study a real system. Read the shut-eye books and learn the system, or expect ot be called out by someone.

The Mini-Pitch can be worked just about anywhere... I've done good with it in steak houses, coffee shops, deli markets, and exhibition spots. @ $10.oo for 10-minutes you can easily see a $200.00 to as much as $500.00 day... CASH! And have fun getting there!

the 1/2 was undecided. He equivocated. Couldn't fully commit to being a true unbeliever. Kind of a shut eye with one eye open. I am sure you have encountered the type. Enjoy! Rex |
