Some one ask about the name of the Jay Scott Berry device. I dug mine out and it is here in front of me. It is called micro mist. It is actually pretty neat when in use.
THOUGHTfully,

Ross, there is always a 5L flask, and check the local dermo clinic, they us LN to burn warts and stuff, maybe they will sell you a litre or two from time to time, can't imagine it would take that much for the effect!
Besides if you do a cool effect or two for them from time to time and you only need a thermos full, heck it might be good to work up a contact at a local clinic

Ultra Smoke 2000 uses titanium tetrachloride. This produces a vapor which is composed of water and hydrochloric acid. It is noxious, toxic and dangerous.

Liquid Nitrogen?? not exactly safe folks.
Titanium tetrachloride?? again... not a safe thing. What about using a cigarette butt? Agreed it is not quite PC, but heck, compared to the other stuff folks are suggesting it's MUCH safer. Can anyone suggest a PRACTICAL solution? some micro fine power perhaps? It's not the rigging that concerns me, it's the toxicity.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

LN2 isn't toxic per se, but it is cold. Of course, if you are going to use it in significant quantity (say to fill a stage with a london fog) you may have problems with anoxia which could become fatal. If you aren't comfortable handling it, don't.
For the quantity the ruddy colored one is thinking of, it seems to me to be a near perfect solution. With the provisio, of course, that it isn't sold just anywhere. For that matter, dry ice has many of the same problems. It just isn't as cold or as hard to buy. For both materials, mixing in an unpressurized vessal with warm water will produce white clouds of water vapor. It will also evolve plenty of nitrogen gas (from LN2) or carbon dioxide gas (from dry ice). Both are non-toxic, as long as you don't evolve so much as to displace significant amounts of oxygen. If candles go out and canaries tip over, you forgot to open a window... Don't even think about storing either in a closed vessel. Of course, a 2L soda bottle 1/4 full of water and a few chunks of dry ice makes a nice loud bang, not that I would ever have tried that or recommend that anyone else try it

There are some precautions that need to be taken with LN, and the reason I did not mention the LN except in the PM I sent, because I KNOW that Ross and Cliff are aware of those safety precautions.
They are not that bad, but to take a wee bit more than common sense, and the training is good to have (part of my daily job). I have worked with ALL of the substances named in this thread, and a few more besides. I suggested the one I consider to be the safest to "handle" for the operator and to get the best results. Okay, if you cannot conjure up the real thing via your extraordinary powers of Magickal control, of the LN is not in your flavor sense. For more "practical", use your fire from palms and add a Splintax match to the gimmick. You will need an igniter or striker to start the match---not as much as the LN, nor will it flow off the hands to the floor. Splintax match---look it up in a scientific supply catalog. k

Yes. that looks interesting, and a lot like the old chemical trick that Andruzzi popularized.

You might also want to look into Brother Shadow's effect "Alchemy" in his exellent book : Being A Treatise On The Theory & Presentation Of Magick. This effect is based on an effect by Tony Andruzzi (Masklyn Ye Mage) in " The Grimoire Of The Mages".......it is not nessessarily "controlled smoke" but maybe it will spark an idea or two?
