I just finished reading "Carter Beats the Devil," which I enjoyed.
What are some other favorite books and stories featuring magicians? Note, I'm not talking about fantasy wizard characters, like Gandalf, but, rather, the kind of magicians we profess to be. I'll suggest one: the memoirs of Robert-Houdin.

In the old mystery pulps, Walter Gibson wrote some short stories about Norgil the Magician.

Conjuring by James Randi is a nice compilation of many historical and modern magicians and performers. The layout is biographical with no fiction. There are quite a few pictures. I enjoyed the book.

Just reading the Phillip Pullman book series "His Dark Materials" which has LOTS of magic and images that could suggest magic.
