I would say Finn Jonn predated Vito Lupo though Vito certainly repopularized as did Lossander.
I just found in an old mum magazine a receipe for making the bubble solution. It was interesting but I have not had time to study it yet. If you are doing the multiplying bubble effect, why not eliminate the shell and do it non gimmicked way? Richard

You can get the trick complete from Steve Varro at Dock Haley Gospel Magic for $12.00. It's called Bible Bubbles but the trick can be used for secular performances. His website is http://www.gospelmagic.com It is well made and is cheaper than making one yourself.

I have had some, shall we say "different" experiences with making clear plastic balls which I can tell you about. Some of you "senior" members may remember a toy called Bangers that sold like the hula hoop about twenty years ago. The toy was made with two clear balls and a string about 24 inches long that had one ball molded onto to it on one end and the other ball molded onto it on the other end. I think there is a weapon used somewhere called Bolo Balls where two heavy balls are held together by a rope and then they are thrown Anyway, the toy worked in the following manner. You held the string in the middle which left you with an attached ball on each end. Then you started to move your hands up and down and the balls would start to click against each other. As they got faster and faster the balls would hit on the bottom of the arc and then fly up to the top of the arc again hitting and making a real racket which the kids loved. They sold for about two dollars for a set and when they were at their zenith stores could not sell them fast enough. Then some manufacturer knocked the item off and instead of using a piece of nylon string they used regular cotton string. When the balls were going rat-tat-tat and the string broke the balls would fire out like a rocket and very easily could hit the user or a nearby bystander with a hunk of acrylic or polyester resin that was travelling at a high rate of speed. Some one could get badly hurt and some did. Just as these bangers reached hula hoop rates of sale the U.S. government stepped in ( as they should have) and stopped the manufacture of the balls and the people who had manufactured them had to have a general recall which made what looked like a profitable idea a road to quick bankruptcy. So what did this have to do with bubbles or clear balls. The way these were made would allow you to make a set of bubbles quickly and beautifully. How? Find a group of glass Christmas Tree Ornaments the size you want for your solid bubbles. Go to a plastic supply jobber or a craft store and buy either clear acrylic resin or clear polester resin and the catalyst to kick the resin into a solid state. Then mix up your resin with the catalyst and pour the liquid into the ornament. It then takes a few hours to harden. When hard, just break the ornament off and WALLA a clear plastic bubble. So fellow conjurers that is a way for you to make clear plastic bubbles or balls in all sizes at very little cost by just using different diameter glass Christmas Tree ornaments.

I too bought a set about 25 years ago from international magic. and like kris, never used the shell in a multiplying ball routine - even so, and during practice (luckily) it slipped and fell and smashed. I still have 3 glass bubbles in my close up bag and produce them magicaly close up.
I do believe this set is still available from Martin. Enjoy, danismagic |

A little extra bit I add, after manipulating the solid bubble a while I squash the ball between my palms. Retention switch to a 3" magnifying glass lens and show it solid too. It's a take on some little paddle trick I have. Rick
