Is anyone a Dune reader?
Do you realise that more Dune books have been written? We have now got 3 books of the major houses pre dune. Atreides. Harkonnen. Corrino. and 3 books in the distant past of the Duniverse. The Butlerian Jihad. The Machine Crusade. The Battle of Corrin. The last 3 are abit mushed together and some parts are badly written, you can see the story get shattered at points. The first 3 about the houses major are a good read.

Yes, read the last five books as they came out... and awaiting the sixth.
I found little surprise or suspense in the last books. More back story than story IMHO. Dune was an impressive set of books. I also liked his other books, including The Dosadi Experiment, The Green Brain, Hellstrom's Hive, The Santatroga Barrier, The Eyes of Heisenberg... Once gave out copies of The Dosadi Experiment as presents. Might give out copies of the Phillip Pullman "dark materials" books this year. Okay, back to the battle or corrin. real sad about the fate of IX... or was that a Beatles joke done Frank Herbert style??

I haven't even given the new ones a try. I figured they wouldn't hold a candle to the original series (the first book was a life changing experience for me). But if you guys think they're alright maybe I'll give one a try. Yeah, I know, beware peer pressure, but, hell, I inhaled too.
Dr. Midnight, did you try when they first came out or is this trying to pick them up now. I'm not sure they would mean much in the present world. They were incredible when they came out though. Mark

Well, it was just that the intense, tightly-packed historical dissertation in that first page was so dry and intricate that it reminded me of my Greek History volume in college. I found myself 'reading words' and just couldn't maintain interest.

I must say that 'The Machine Crusade' has spoilt the whole pre-prequel series for me.
In a matter of a few pages, a large section of the story is ruined in a mass chain of abnormal events. The swordfighters planet and the thing that hits it (don't wanna spoil it anymore than it has been) is just ridiculous. Talk about a mass character cull I am of the opinion that the section I mentioned was penned by Brian Herbert. lastnitesfun. The new books are written by 2 authors together. They do not have the same feel as 'Dune'. They do however, do a good job at extending the Duniverse. The 3 Houses books are very good in comparison with the Jihad books. JT. Note the mistake (House Atreides, I think) when Jessica is chosen by Leto. Then later it is written that Jessica was selected by Gurney H. as this was an important part of dune history, I felt the writers had messed up the plot lines due to rushing.

The Dune books were great.
I remember the days when I used to just read and read. I mean I read sci-fi, fantasy, horror, Ludlum stuff/action, even some of the old Mac Bolan books as well as true espionage books about the CIA and Mossad. That was all B.M. (before marriage). Nowadays I get a read in once in awhile. But Dune was always like one of THE best sci fi books I ever read. I must have read it at least 3 times and I read about 2 or 3 after that. They were ok but seemed to get weaker with each successive issue. It sounds like there are several more available now. I might try and figure where I left off and see if I can get my hands on another one. Thanks for the update. GlenD

Just a little tidbit of information about "Dune". The very first novel was inspired by a poem Frank Herbert had read. Unfortunately, that poem is lost to history now. The poem was not some great epic or even some lengthy treatise written by some famous poet of the time. It was a haiku. Short, but full of words and ideas.

I read the first 2 and lost interest on the third.
Loved it up to that point. |
