most of you know the "elevator ring" trick, either from harlan or ammar or about.magic.com, where a finger ring slowly ascends along a stretched rubber band. I have have found it effective to use another rubber band instead of a finger ring. i explain that I get it to "walk" up the streched band by rocking it back and forth - so as it rises, I am rocking my hands, which makes the loose band appear to be sort of wiggling its way up. it almost seems possible. after a little bit of that, I tell the spectator that I have gotten the movement down so well that I can achieve the rising with almost no perceptible motion, and I proceed to do this. the benefit of the presentation is that all eyes are usually on the loose (rising) band, rather than on the tight one, so spectators will be less likely to notice anything -
the effect is so simple and pretty. has anybody else come up with interesting presentations or uses for the move? |

That sounds like a good idea. I seem to recall someone in here mentioning a "ski lift" trick using too bands. I think this may be the type of effect you are explaining. I like the idea of moving the bands back and forth, this can help shield what is actually going on.
if your rubber bands are in the position think you're in, i sometimes do a mod of CMH from there(just like CMH with a ring).
It takes a big man to cry...... but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I saw this trick but never tried it because it seemed so obvious on what was going on. How well does this actually play? I may have to test it out on some people.

I use a single strand of a broken band and I've done it many times and no-one has had a clue as to what's causing the borrowed ring to rise. I usually have a patter that talks about 'for everything there's an opposite - for east there's west, for high there's low, for men there's women and for gravity there's anti-gravity. I then sprinkle some anti-gravity dust on the ring and up it goes'! Very simple but very effective-then go into ring on band to kill them.
I'll try the rising rubber band idea but somehow I can't see it being as impressive as rising a solid gold ring. Just my opinion. Bill |

Is it better to break the band, because you could do it without breaking it.

Whether it's necessary to break the band seems to depend on what type of band you're using. If it is fairly skinny, then you can pinch the ends and do the trick without breaking.
ChessMess - I also thought it would be obvious, but it is a fooler. Of course it is best as a quick interlude in a good routine, and if you make it seem like it is something that is actually possible to do, a la my presentation, then it becomes more of a juggling trick than a magical effect. I'm not an IT guy, but I bet you could do this trick a couple times with an IT setup, then have the ring slide right off of the whole band and into the air. that would be very cool to see. |
