All of Shiels' books are highly collectible.
This one has a few prize effects in it! Opening effect, "Post card from Pigwiggin", is so simple to do, yet fools them all! There is also a wonderful routine "Lija Milkies Nose". The story revolves around a giant, a witch, And the Brainwave deck! There are also a few routines with spirit ties in there. For those of you who like a vampire theme, "Nightmares" is a wonderful routine set with a letter from Johnathon Harker. Perhaps the best part of this book is the last chapter which is dead-icated to Patter, Dressing, and Atmosphere. It's a small booklet, 20 pages. It belongs on every bizarrist's shelf! Magickman

This book got a lot of bizarrists started. Although it is really very basic, it covers the essentials of bizarre magic. If you can find a copy, buy it.

Well worth picking up. I got a copy of this, and a collection of the Charles Cameron booklets. They got me started in bizarre. Fascinating reading!

A great book, as are all of his. If you don't have a source yet, do an online search for "magic books by post". They're an outfit out of England that carry most of Shiels' early writing as well as the early stuff from Charles Cameron. They're quick and very nice to deal with.

This is a foundation work and should be studied by anyone seriously pursuing bizarre magic(k).

I have it, and a number of other books by Shiels and Cameron. Good material in most cases.
One thing to watch for with any of these Supreme Magic bizarre volumes is that some of the effects seem 'speculative' (they might or might not work in practice, in some cases). Steve

I am deeply endebted to 'Doc' Shiels' work: you can count me, also, as one of those it got started.

Doc Shiels is a treasure. His books allowed me to see some fairly conventional magic as truly strange. Consider his obvious love of the Cups and Balls, expressed in some of his books and also in his delightful video, "It's Alive."
He did busking, tent shows, monster summoning and more, in addition to his efforts in bizarre magic. Even if you don't think that some of his effects are practical in performance, or if they don't suit your style, it is his thinking that is so valuable. Get all his books and read them carefully! I think that he really helped me to strip away the bright lights, sequined costumes, and pervasive harmlessness from twentieth-century magic, and reclaim the mystery, power, and danger that lies even within the Cups and Balls, let alone the darker explorations outlined in his books. I've always been a fan of Tony "Doc" Shiels.
In fact, I've always been a fan of non-conventional magicians. |

If you don't already have it, I recommend that anyone interested in Doc Shiels pick up a copy of the CD, "Bizarre Magic" of Tony 'Doc' Shiels. This is a re-release of the Martin Breese tape from 1988.
You can read about it here: http://www.martinbreese.com It can be found at most decent magic dealers for about $20 (US). I'm guessing that this CD is the closest thing I'll ever get to a visit with the master. Magickally, Dave |

Yeah, I love Doc. He is so dramatic and, oh, the stuff he has done with the media--- what a hoot! He is a great model on staying "in character".
