Anyone know where I can find the Haunted Key in brass?
I would also make a very nice offer if someone wanted to sell. Thanks |

Go to an antique store. Ask for old skeleton keys. Try them all out til you find "the" one. You'll know when you find it.

I did this walking down Portobello market here in London. There were dozens of old keys at various stalls and many of them seemed to work quite well.

I have done the haunted key for years, slowly and properly, with different keys. Perhaps I have the wrong audience, but no one has ever been fooled or impressed. So I have given it up.

I recently saw a magician at The Magic Castle incorporate this into his close-up act. It was about a third of the way into his act but it went over well. It was not a show stopper or anything that got a great response but it worked for him.
He seemed to use it as a transition into other effects and he had a nice story that went along with it. Almost made me want to get one! GlenD

I did it as part of my intro to a Haunted House we were running last Halloween. I had kids run out screaming!!! Of course, I had a good story and "theatre" on my side as the setting was jussssst right for such an effect.

I think that the haunted key can by a brilliant effect although it can also be a truly horrible one. Performance is everything with this one.
One day I will write a book

May I just add that anyone in the San Francisco area who wants to learn more about presenting this effect may want to sign up for Jim Fassbinder's Ghost Walk (google is your friend). It's a great evening out with a smattering of excellent mentalism included, but more specifically you will see Jim present his version of the Haunted Key. In my humble and less than expert opinion, it's the ultimate Master Class in how to present this item. Jim's presentation is extraordinary, and I have seen him transport a small group of people into the realm of pure astonishment (in the Paul Harris sense) with this one effect (and remember, he's doing this outdoors, on a busy sidewalk with distractions, people and traffic all around). I now count it as one of my most favourite mentalism performances.

I concurr! The San Francisco Ghost Walk is excellent, and Jim does a great job with the history of the places he takes you to, and the unusual occurances along the way!
Jim's use of the Key is outstanding and well timed for the audience. This one is truly dependant on the presentation.

I think that the story behind your "Haunted Key" is what makes or breaks it as an effect.
Robert Neale has a clever presentation in I believe Tricks of the Imagination. |

We live in the year 2004, where we can teleconference from our desktop computers, or get pictures of lovely redhead wimmin-folk (redundant, I know) beamed from thousands of miles above our heads down to a small dish on the roof of our homes, for pity's sake. I've seen precious few routines using the simple-to-acquire knack used with the haunted key that make any sense. I'm left asking "how", not "why" -- and that's the worst question any spectator can ask about any trick you do. John LeBlanc |
