Why aren't there any female mentalists? There are some wonderful female magicians. (And, for that matter, why aren't there any female orchestra conductors?)

There are one or two that here that participate from time to time and from what I've seen wish they would more often...

Huh? Last time I looked at my calendar, it said 2004. The twenty-first century, I believe . . . Jack Shalom

That sylvia brown lady on the montel williams show is a pretty good female mentalist. Shes one of the mentalists who pretends what she does is real.

What about anabelle that posts on here. She seems to be female and has a very entertaining e-book out as well.

Yeah, she is from the Florida area. She may be hurting a bit after all the storms that way.

The best reader I've ever met wasn't a psychic or mentalist or magician. She was a model/talent booker. The thing is, she could read you in a minute and tell you everything about your life and be very convincing. She didn't use any particular underground knowledge, she had just met so many different people over the years, she knew how everyone worked. It was downright chilling when she started doing it in groups.
And Greg's right; Sue's really good. |

It might be the twenty-first century but it hasn't been that long since they let women join 'The Magic Circle'. People resigned and members left.
You will probably in that there are a lot more female magicians and mentalists than you think, we're just 'underground' I suppose. I've taken years of snide comments made by others who feel it's a mans art, so you can't blame us. Anyway, we're all far too busy shopping, washing our hair and filing our nails to practise such things |

Still, women like Tina Lenert, Trixie Bond, Jade, Melinda, Celeste Evans, Frances Willard, Sue-Anne Webster, Lisa Menna, Joanie Spina and many others didn't ascend the heights they have by worrying about what anyone had to say about their choices. And they aren't underground, either. (Especially Joanie Spina, thank heavens.) Quote:

I didn't say that everyone is underground just that some performers are.
I was approached at a magic convention in Blackpool to be told by a a middle-aged gentleman that himself and several others have left the magic circle since they allowed women in. The fact that I acted happy and laughed made the sitution worse. I would love to make an issue of such things but I couldn't really care less, glad you brought up the question though. |

Another plus, in my experience: It seems to make sense to a client to pay a fortune teller by the hour or by the reading, but they want to pay a flat fee for a "show" by a mentalist or magician. YMMV. |

Just because it's the year 2004, every endeavor undertaken by a man must equally be undertaken by women? Is that what you believe? John, I have respect for your views on mentalism, but really, this is a distortion of what both you and I said. Your question was "Should there be more female mentalists?" I find that question objectionable in the same way that I would find it objectionable to ask "Should there be more Italian mentalists?" or "Should there be more Texas-based mentalists?" I don't believe in excluding people because of gender, race, or political beliefs. Jack
