Hello there,
Do you have any ideas for how to disappear on stage. I'm familiar with methods. But I want a logical flow. I'm in this cabinet, performing spirit effects and for a finale as the effects are occuring I want to be able to disappear and reappear behind the audience. I've been doing it with a run around and using a bas* built into the cabinet. Then I'm covered onto a Dekolta chair. Then the cabinet is wheeled away. Enabling me to do a run around. The problem is that it's a long wait. The audience sees nothing but the Dekolta Asrah sitting with music running till I reach the auditorium end. Too long and boredom sets in and kills even the finale effect. So anyone please suggest what alternative to use. Either the audience should be watching something till the run around is achieved. Something logical which suggests I'm still on stage. Thanks. |

Hi
Do an asrah/ levitation with the chair - empty stage - You enter from back dressed as cloaked figure - get on stage and remove the cloth. Paula

Mac King's Sigfried and Roy routine solves this problem by continuing to talk during the runaround.

Hi Green,
How are you? Can you elaborate what you mean by the S&R routine please? I've not seen it before. Thanks. |

I did a similar effect with a cane cabinet. The stairs got wheeled offstage (with my partner inside) while I shoved 24 bamboo poles into the cabinet. I then remove the poles and the cabinet sides drop to the stage. No one inside. Lights swivel to the back and there is my partner in the middle of the audience blowing a loud whistle. Lot of time to get around while I do the canes.

The gag or rather, the concept of what Mac King does is based on an old Henning bit in which Doug used a standard Tarbell Triangle base and a gaffed bag that was held by two spectators for a supposed costume change. Doug ended up in the audience and someone else ended up in the bag (I believe, I don't remember all the details from something so long ago). During the routine Doug kept speaking with the two assistants from the audience and when he was set, he'd have them open and lower the bag down to the stage floor. If memory serves correctly, he'd jump up from his front row seat and appluad, saying that he always wondered what that trick looked like.
In regards to vanishes, If you're in a spirit cabinet already you can do what Kirkham did with his old INVISIBLE MAN Illusion. I'll not go into too much detail but if you study how the old Triangle and Arabian Tent mysteries worked you'll have a very sound cue as to how to do this. Essentially, the cabinet is taken apart and you're found to be missing. If you have any questions PM me (but remind me about this thread so I can sound like I know what I'm talking about. I forget things too easily) |

Hi Paula,
Can you tell me some other idea rather than the cloaked figure. That wouldn't suit my presentation style. I want something to be happening on stage to give me enough time to carry the run around. It's basically a spirit cabinet in three stages. For the third stage there are manifestations but this shud be something that wud give me exit like B**** art etc. and the manifestations should give me the time for the run around. I have some friends like Micheal here on the Café who has given some nice ideas. But I'd like to hear your ideas, if I can inculcate them too. Thank you. |

For the stage during the run around - lights and smoke with the right music will create the "something else is going to happen" moment. Or perhaps a "Oh dear it has all gone wrong" and you are stuck / lost / dead ? Your assistants can "fill" those seconds whilst you dash around. Do a switch with the chair - you to your assistant. Or (this is just a suggestion, not attempting to steal this great bit) Penn and Tellar do an audience appearence where the trick conludes and Penn is nowhere to be found after being hanged (his feet are still visible hanging below the projection screen). During the blackout a loud cell phone ring is heard, the lights come up in the audience, and Penn is seen sittting in the middle of a row, asking the person next to him to please turn off his phone. This is a great bit considering he is still in a straight jacket. Hope this provided some inspiration.

Maybe like Paula said have something go wrong and come in dressed as a stage manager and walk in with your back to the audience. Fake yell up to see if everythings alright and whisk the cloth down.

It is all in the timing.
