I work on a cruise ship and want to appear center stage using some prop that leaves me in the standing position...not crouched or stooping.
I want something that plays fast and not a flash appearance frame. I have tried several but none seem to fit my style. Here's the catch. I'm not dramatic, or Copperfieldish...I'm casual and want it to be fun. If you have ideas I would be grateful. I have been working on the need for a change as this is my fourth year doing the same opening...time for a change. Cheers, Shawn Farquhar http://www.magiChampion.com |

Hi Shawn,
I worked something out a couple of years ago that used a simple mirror table and a cloth. A small table is empty center stage. A folded cloth is on the table. Slowly the cloth rises up. When it falls, the magician is standing on the table. Best of all, the cloth naturally covers the table at the finish, making it very easy to remove from the stage without worrying about bad angles. Hi Shawn
I have had great success using Trasmorgrification (the mummy wrap). Plays big packs small. It will depend on situations but I have used it for both a swicth i.e. Assistant to me or reverse, an appearance, a vanish, etc. You can use it if you have a procinium arch, wings, back curtain or just some large sets on the sides. email me for details on my usage. This can be done on cruise ships quite easily. Hope this helps Brian Glow magic@brianglow.com |

What about Andrew Mayne's Infinity Cabinet? To a degree, it is like a flash appearance. However, the great benefit at the end is that you are standing in an empty framework, because the sides are all roller blinds that retract into the top. You appear in the standing position. There is no flash or fire involved in this, unless you want there to be. It can be themed many ways. - Donald

Hi Sean,
Inertia from my book has been used as a standing version. It's very simple; you only have walk forward then open the doors. Could be themed to suit your style. Cheers Mark

One of the advantages I forgot to mention about the Infinity Cabinet, is that it packs really small. Just the top, the bottom, and 4 poles (or posts framework), which can break down, as well. Storage space for illusions is at a premium on a ship. It's in Andrew's book, "Illusion F/X". Find it here: http://www.weirdthings.com/illusion.htm There was a dealer (Illusions By Your Design) at one time who had permission to sell the pre-made illusion. See ad in March 2000 Magic Magazine. - Donald.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the input and the pm's. I am looking into all the ideas. The great thing about working on a ship is I have plenty of time to try new ideas... Thanks, Shawn |

Flambe is a cool opening, a little dramatic though... bulky too from what I hear.
