Call your Representatives TODAY!!!!!!!! A long time ago in the days before VHS, there was betamax and the MPAA(Movie Association sued manufacturers of VCR's and Beta's and VHS tapes because it infringed on their copyright of their movies. This is why, back in the day, movies would come out on HBO before video, because the MPAA considered VHS and home movies "illegal" and would hurt their sales. The court decided that it was legal to own VCR's and this was the base of "fair use" laws that allow you to tape programs and copy movies for archival purposes, as well as own camcorders and video tapes to videotape your family. HOWEVER, there is an act in congress called the "INDUCE" act, that is looking to overturn all your rights as you know them now. What does this mean? -It could be illegal to own a VCR / DVD player that does not have the "correct" anti-piracy software -It could be illegal to buy blank CD's / DVD's without a "permit" and also could disable your home CD/DVD burners from making copies of things you really own. -It could require you to obtain a permit from the government just to camcord your children's birthdays and such. -It would give the MPAA/RIAA the power to shut down any new technology it deems "bad". The Bill, as written, is very loose in its wording and ANYTHING that can store copyrighted material is included, like hard drives, ipods, tapes, cd's ect. It doesn't matter if you are using it for illegal purposes or not, this act can make you lose control of things you already own. What can you do? TODAY, Sep. 14th is the NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY. Sign up at http://www.savebetamax.org/ and you will be given a list of representatives, phone numbers and a time to call. There are over 2000 people signed up, with luck we can make sure that our rights are protected, not "big buisnesses" rights. ----------------------------------------------- I just want to say I am in no way affiliated with the poeple running this, but just chanced upon it and read the act and relize how bad this could be for the USA. It is already crazy enough with things like the RIAA sueing people like "Proffesor Usher" who had an mp3 for a class he was teaching labeled "usher.mp3" and similer frivolous lawsuits. This will give them the power they need to actually go after you in your own home. Check out the site and the bill, if you live in the US, I strongly encourage you all to call in today and let your representatives know your stance! |
