I have been tossing the idea around of building prefabricated illusions. In other words, illusions for the guy who wants to build but just doesn’t have all the tools or the time. It would be like a model kit. We would provide the shell and all the workings and you would put it together and paint it yourself. I would love to hear feedback on this. I really think there could be a market here. By the way, the illusions would be originals, not classics.

Billy, that actually sounds like an awesome idea! Though I think a few "Classics" thrown in wouldn’t hurt either.

Steve, I suppose my thoughts on classics are that there is too much of the same things out there. Maybe down the road I will put a classic package together. Since this is my idea and I already build from my own concepts and ideas, then this would be a good route to also establish it as my idea. Ohterwise tons of other builders will jump on the band wagon and claim it as their own. They can’t steal originality.

It really is a great idea. A tiny error in cutting can compound from one part to the next. Having precut pieces would mean tight accurate fits, and smooth operation.

Great idea as not everyone has access to a workshop.
I live in an appartment and would have to use the kitchen.

That idea stinks!!
Oh wait, this isn’t chadmagic’s post on balloon animals? Sorry Billy. I was just trying to break up the monotony of praises because it is a great idea and I also would love to hear more! I can’t build a thing. I’m all thumbs. (Kinda makes it hard to do a good pass). (Chad that was hilarious!)

Wonderful idea. Even having plenty of workshop space and tools, it would be great to "Kit it" and not have to spend time looking for just the right "whatever" material, etc.
Sounds like a winner. Bro David

The Idea sounds great!
Do you think Owen, or MAK Magic would approve? Right now the rumblings about Magic Shops folding because the Internet undercuts prices are loud and clear! One needs to look at Paul Osborne’s work. Why did his Corporation fold? The Zig-Zag illusion for under $200 dollars, well, how many stage magicians would be using it. The word now is, it is over used. India produces mass magic, what about their quality and how many of us have at least one of their products? It is instant money for the designer! I am going to make 3 suitcase tables in my shop. It would be nothing to mass produce these in a kit form. Instead of $300, how about $100 plus shipping, you paint, or pre-paint, or cloth covered. Interesting!

Wow, why has nobody else thought of this idea. You can buy car kits, model kits and also sewing kits (last one is a joke). Illusions that pack flat are pretty much kits anyway. I say go for it.

Wow, I'm about to sound like everyone else, but that is an incredibly well thought out idea. My main concern would be quality control. Email me when you are further along in research and development.

I usually re-paint or re-decorate my magic shop bought props anyway, so I'm all for the "assemble it yourself, paint it yourself" kits idea.
Zanadu used to put out "kits" in the 70's. I bought one of their Dagger Chest head vanish units. It was my first "big illusion". I believe that U.F. Grant was the first dealer to market pre-cut , but unassembled, undecorated tricks in kit form. It's a good idea. Good to see someone do it again. |

Did this idea ever get of the first stage. If so can anyone direct me to more information.
Thanks Nick |

There was an outfit called Siros Mfg Co. which advertised in Genii in the 60's or early 70's. They sold do-it-yourself kits but for smaller appartus (production boxes, drawer box etc.) Kits contained all materials except the paint.

Don't expect this idea to go anywhere, and if it does do not buy from Mr. Diamond. many magicians have had many problems with him. Here are a few threads to read for more info:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=7 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......=7&6 There are more, but that is all a quick search turned up. Mr. Diamond is currently banned from the Café if my memory serves me correctly. I am just warning you, so that you do not make the same mistake that others have made. Nick Fox |
