You show a board with four or more holes in it. You have a very sharp dagger that can be put upright in any of the holes. An audience menber does this while your back is turned and blinfolded. Then the dagger and the empty spaces are covered with paper bags. You turn around (still blindfolded) and start smashing the paper bags with you hand till just one remains. Of course it's the one with the dagger.
Just remembered this last night can came up with three methods of doing it. Does it exist already or did I came up with anything new?? Alex

Their are several performers who perform similar effects. I believe it started off with performers wanting to take the Just Chance effect up a level and also finding a more or less legal Russian roulette, effect.
One day I will write a book

And it IS dangerous!!! Several performers have impaled their hands doing this effect...so proceed carefully in choosing a method.

I saw a nice variation with wooden stools, one with a spike on it. Each was covered with a plastic bowler hat from a joke/fancy dress store. The (comedy) magician then played musical chairs with his assistant and the last hat was lifted to reveal the spike. You could almost feel the pain each time he sat down! (needless to say he didn't mess it up)

Go to http://www.infotainer.com and watch Joel Bauer perform it on CBS clip. He has several other videos on his site worth watching.

Looks like the videos have been moved to joellive.com
and will be active on Friday. He has gotten into another business since the tradeshow market softened, it appears. It will be worth checking the videos in a week, methinks. Tom |

Gary kurtz has a similar effect in his show - but I don´t know how safe his version is: if you watch the intro to his homepage, you can see that he uses the knife with the sharp side down.
to be honest, I haven´t had the chance to see him, just read a few reviews and saw the pictures. P.s.: homepage http://www.garykurtz.com |

Scott Alexander's approach (with broken bottle) is probably just as effective and (my from my understanding) a whole lot safer....

The gary kurtz version is not safe.
I saw him does a mistake and almost stab himself. It was his first show and the light enginner was very bad !

If you're into this sort of thing you might want to consider Outlaw's Scorpion (aka Makibishi).
It looks good to me and it's $65 plus $10 US shipping or $15 international shipping. That sure beats $500.

Aldo Colombini has a version of this effect called "Real Danger", which uses colored bags and a broken bottle. You supply the bags and bottle, though he does include some essential props in the package. Nice and basic, and it will set you back about $17 or so, not including the bags which you need to supply. I have used this with both broken bottles and eggs, depending on my audience. The other nice thing about this is that you don't need a table. I just set the bags at the edge of the stage. This is a basic, no frills effect that plays very big with the right amount of showmanship. You will need to provide a script as the instructions only teach the working of the effect. I use this in almost every show and it plays great.
