I don't know if this is the right place to post this but how does one look for a mentor in magic? I produced a promo vcd and I was hoping to sent it to someone to critique. Any one can guide me in this area?
I do mostly parlour and stage magic. FM

I just looked in the phonebook for "magicians" and then I called the nearest one near me. I meet up with him about every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks and he helps me improve my magic.
It's probably one of the greatest things you could do for yourself in helping out your magic. For me it was easy to get him to mentor me because I told him it was for a project I was doing at school and it required a mentor.(which is true) So good luck and tell us how it goes |

NO. Don't do that. You tend to pick up the idiosyncracies of the teachers you learn from. You don't want to take a chance on picking some shoddy magician--and most magicians are just that.
Find a group of professionals. Maybe it's your local IBM or SAM chapter. Maybe it's a group that hangs out at a local coffee shop. Maybe it's some guy who does shows everywhere but doesn't talk to anyone in your town. Whoever they are, find them. Then, find the best person. Who is the best person? That's subjective. You can only find the best person for you. Then, become their friend first. Take them out for lunch, just as you would a dear friend. Send christmas cards. Buy their kids presents. Just don't be a stalker. The key here is to give and be generous giving, because you'll be doing an awful lot of taking. And be open to learning. And questioning why things are done the same way (cultivate the skill of asking questions without offending). Then, consider yourself an apprentice. Hope it helps. Best, James. |

Read as much as you can on your own. Buy tricks and videos too so that when you find someone who's going to be your mentor, your mentor will be learning as well from you.
So that it will be a give and take situation, although you seem to learn more than your mentor. |
