I'm sure this has been asked about a hundred times but make it 101! I'm after really good effects but I am not a fan of 'business' any effect that states 'a good bit of business' . in the show I do I avoid magic words and wiggly fingers and wands and try to let the effects speak for themselves. I am now trying to revamp the show and wonder if any one can offer a few effects that might suit my neds?
All help greatly received!

Hi Oliver,
One of my all time favourite effects is the 'Sad/Happy Clown Silk' from Practical magic. http://www.practical-magic.com I built a 20 min routine from it and used it for about a year. It's a simple routine, inexpensive, with lots of audience particapation. Can be used in front of a small audience in a house or on stage in front of a 1000 kids if you wish. Over the years, whenever I change any part of my show, I've never re-used any of my props, but I will eventually re-use this one. Although it suited my style, it might not suit yours, but I would recomend having a look at it, and think about what you could do with it. Best wishes Billy |

I'm not sure what you're asking. This is the section for kid show entertainment and you're asking for effects that don't interact with the kids, and doesn't require bits of business.
This sounds like a silent act done with musical background, where as, you make the moves and magic happens. The vanishing Bandana is a kid show audio interactive effect requiring facial and body language to pull it off. Arthur Stead's Skull-O-Pini, Merlin, & Abe Lincoln (new effects) are similar to the vanishing bandana, and you interact with the CD. Only one of these is really good within a show. My Kid show would be a flop without the interactions and comedy bits of business. If your're talking Family shows, are you focusing on the manipulator type of show? You're post is confusing for a kid show act. I can imagine many of the acts posted here in this section bsed on the poster's comments, but your concept is not the norm.

I take it you are putting together a very short children's show. Because without the interaction they wont hang about for long.

What about the ol favorites:
Hippity Hop Rabbits Fraidy Cat Rabbit Peanut Butter n Jelly Sponges I am starting to add homemade type "interacting" more and more funny stuff like Clive said. I feel the parents will want to see you do some real magic (for the kids though:) and the rest needs to be comedy or involving the children.

I always include interaction with the children but not the over the top extended screaming that the majority of childrens entertainers indulge in. My experience of other acts is getting 'whos who at the zoo' or similar and milk 20 minutes out of it with really lame patter. My point is just because we are working with children it does not mean we should treat them as stupid. They will appreciate a more sophisticated routine if it is put in a way they understand. In all the routines I do they children are part of the magic and are asked to shout/involve themselves but I don't want routines that are just naff props and weak patter. I am after a bit of substance from the effects. There we go rant over . carry on as if I'm not here!

Don't knock who's who, Its one of mine and silly billy's fav kids tricks, I have made a special cage for mine and Its great!. You can shorten long routines like what I used to do, I use to get 3 mins out of ten minuite routine, when your doing that you are just going to be going through so much magic and all the tricks will go over the kids heads.

Matt,
The one I bought off Ebay is sewn so I never even actually touch the egg. I may have a different one but it really gets em going. C

Even with the effects listed, they go so much better with audience interaction. Yes, I do the miser's dream and the eggs bag, the classic version, and I like to add a little of me in it.
Some science shows, are not audience interaction, but interesting presentations of dry material with a tad of magic added to it to bring forth the concept need to be learned.

Hi
Two tricks that are currently proving popular in my act are Unequal equal ropes. I know it may seem old hat but I tell the story about three little worms whose feet were cold at night (yes worms do have feet!!!!!!!!)and mum and dad could reach the bottom but what about poor little baby worm. I use thick pink ropes and performed it the other day and received gasps from twelve year olds and the birthday girl commented ' that's Freaky!' and when the rope are exmined and found not to stretch that's the clincher. What more could you ask? Also proving popular is Edwin hoopers Rainbow 20th Century silks which with My old comedy vanishing bag invented by Eddie Burke of Magictrix house of magic in the uk and a bag itIs proving to be another gasp inducer. I know that these are anicent effects and we have known about them for years like others such as Childrens classics such as Farmyard frolics or Whos' who at the zoo which I am proud to still perform and can quite happily get 15 minutes from - not with poor patter but with lots of singing and laughter and entertainment which after all is our job I think that we must remember that our audiences may never have seen a breakaway wand or elusive rabbits etc before, even though we are sick to the back teeth of them. I learnt my trade from the books and videos of Eric Sharp - whose laughter packed routines never fail to register and even the oldest efects and be made refreshed for modern day audiences. I have just purchased a fantasio vanishing wand after seen terry herberts routine on his video and it plays to almost continuous laughter - now how long as that been kicking around the dealers stands! Anyway sorry for preaching to the converted I just thought I give my point of view Hope I haven't Upset anyone WACKY |

Matt: Yes that's the egg bag, the mesh one. I really like it. Thanks Den, I need to get a volunteer involved with this and have not.
I usually do it as semi sucker with the underarm gag. I noticed Ken Scott used the birthday star in his routine which at the time of watching it, I had tunnel vision (me syndrome). Wacky: I do the Prof Nightmare with the classic three bears routine. I didn't get to it last b day party but will this Saturday Lord willing. Den: Yes the ol educational show with a touch of magic. My first ever one is next month and it will be a true test of how sufficient I am at this big challenge. Im thankful its not science related though.

HI,
I do use an egg bag of sorts I do an updated(by me) version of abduls fez by Eric Lewis from his book crowning miracles several eggs are produced/vanished ext and finaly a large scarf placed in the fez transforms into a giant egg. if I am performing this for a large group on stage I then produce 20 or so eggs (real ones) over loading the child helper as per Steven Bargatze routine from his lecture notes. I only use the finali for special shows as clearly broken eggs a real messy! Phillip |

Hi, When we toured with Marionette Cabaret we arrived early at many Holiday venues where they had a resident children's entertainer. Yes, I know exactly what you mean by awfully slow pacing. I guess some of these guys had to do 6 different shows a week all summer season and had to stretch every routine beyond belief. Some of these entertainers looked bored out of their skulls and did not have any "light in their eyes" when working. Sad really.
This I feel is inappropriate for birthday shows, which let's face it, make the REAL money, and can be a lifetime's supply of business. But I'd seriously look at DenDowhy's post of September 18 here, as interaction is essential, and in fact to NOT make use of some 'bits of business' is simply throwing away golden entertainment opportunities. I think you know what we are all getting at here; and I certainly understand what you mean in your first posting. I don't get into advising on tricks here myself, as it causes petty differences amongst us (as one man's [woman's] meat is another man's poison obviously when it come to choosing what to buy). Tony. |
