I noticed that sometimes in this forum, some magicians use a strange language like: s**** or [ or ]. I guess it's a secret language but where do they learn that and why?

Hmmm...this is an open forum and certain explanations/words are not allowed. The post will get deleted.
It is up to people's fantasies (and knowledge) to fill in the missing parts themselves. A [, for example, is a hollow thing you put over something that has a "c" for the first letter.

Usully the asterisks make no sense at all. In some cases you'll have people talking about different kinds of f**** shuffles or classic p*** etc.

The use of "[" for a coin s*ell or "~" for a fol**ng coin is there for convenience and to save us from extra typing. Just as c/s is shorthand for a gaffed coin description. This lets us type "[~" instead of typing "Swadling Coin." Two characters instead of thirteen seems a bargain to me.
Some of use shorthand like CP and FP for commonly used coin concealments. And recently some have adopted EG for the nice thing David Roth introduced us to in his lecture/book. The intent remains to communicate clearly and efficiently. There is no "strangeness" in the process. The shorthand also allows some ideas to be expressed directly even on the open sections of the forum. It seems a win/win to me. What are your thoughts on the matter?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Shorthand is great for the reasons you mentioned. Astersisks, however, are ridiculous. As if writing ****** (not a dirty word) coin or classic p*** would fool anyone, and what for? All it takes to find out about different coin gaffs is to go into the Accesories page of an internet magic shop and see what kinds of gaffs are available. We all know that there are thumbtips, shells, shims, double backed cards and pulls. It doesn't mean we know how and when they're all used.

In my opinion, it's not very fair because when the beginners have a look on this forum it's very hard to understand a lot of messages because some magicians use a secret language. So I think even if we want to protect the secret of the tricks, it would be nice to share some 'keys' of your language with people like me!

The funny part is that I can read Bill's post.
I have NO idea what Payne is saying but that's not unusual... ask anyone who's seen him do the DaVinci Code card trick. |

Bill & Tom.... too f*nny!
Jon, agreed. However I use the shorthand primarily because I'm a l*zy *******. Best, Mike |
