They make some really nice fake limbs,(medical supply stores)have you looked there? Or you could look into some fx shops,(check there, they are cheap!) You can find them in the back of fangoria magazine. Latex is the best thing to use.

If you want to fool anyone you need to figure out a way, as the pros have, to make the fake feet appear to wiggle on their own. Otherwise you are doing the effect the very way a novice would suspect....fake feet. If you have not solved this, then you would be better off building another method for the effect...like the sabre saw sawing in half or the visible sawing with a bow saw.

Rand Woodbury used to have Electronic feet for sale. I don't know if he is still in business. The one's I use were made with the help of Disney World engineers. They are number 1 extremely reliable, #2 very realistic (they work independantly and even rotate), #3 are a pain to make. I would suggest trying to buy them from a pro. buider.
The "feet" are a big part of selling the illusion. That is why I often times avoid the whole problem, with Selbit-Wakeling sawing. |

Do you know how to contact Rand to see if he still makes these?

Servos used in Radio conrol planes and cars work well for animation. I fasten rigid brass rods to the wheels.
I used to contol them by remote control but you can get motion controllers from many places now that supply haunted attractions.

At one time, Owen Redwine made (or had made) artificial limbs for various illusions. I was going to buy a set of legs for a Modern Art that I built.
I'm sure that someone on this forum would have his contact information. Amos McCormick

I purchased Rand's feet some time ago and he did mention that he was thinking of discontinuing the production of this as he was having reliability and delivery problems with his supplier.
Don't quite know if that has been resolved. |

Yes, the feet in this case definately need to move or it will look fake. The thing with latex (either liquid or foam) is that it deteriorates over time. It starts to yellow and eventually will become stiff. Silicone is hard to color but has great translucency to it, very natural. But at least some silicones yellow as, Skinflex I am familiar eith and it does yellow. It helps if your assistant wears pantyhose as it masks the skin a bit.
A friend has the most perfect feet in his sawing. They´re constructed like movie animatronics, they have a fibreglass inner frame which has all the technology and such and on top of that the skin, which can be removed and replaced with a new one if needed.
