Hello all,
I'm just interested in the different ideas everybody has to justify why we are shuffling face up cards into face down cards. The "uncooperative spectator" suggestion in Stars of Magic is nice ("There, let me see you get out of this") The "drunk spectator" is also nice. I think this is used in ETMCM. The "blind spectator" doesn't really make sense since he wouldn't know if you got the card right anyway. The "child spectator" could work, but the child wouldn't shuffle the cards in the neat manner required for the trick. Unless, the slop shuffle is used. It may be suitable in that context. The "mathmatician spectator" may work also. "I did a trick for a mathmatician the other day. To make the probability of me finding his card exponentially low, he shuffled this way" What are some other justifications? What about non-"the spectator did it this way" justifications?

Ignorance. It be very comedic. Just act like you don't realize.

I do think that justification is required; the end effect will be that the cards are righted again so you do need to call attention to the shuffle. I would say that "just to make things even more difficult I'll mix half face up and half face down, that way no one knows where anything is"

Justify or rationalize?

The reason you give to the spectator depends entirely upon your presentation. If you are presenting it with a story line, which should be as brief as possible, in any case, you can use the uncooperative spectator idea. If you are presenting it as an item shown to you by a gambler in the wacky ward, you can present it as a shuffle by a madman. (I know this isn't PC. Big deal. It's a story, for Pete's sake!)
Or you can say, "You may ask, 'what would happen if you shuffled half of the cards upside down?' " Quote: "You must learn to think for yourselves." -- Brian.

In the course of my routine, I've shown a bunch of unusual and humorous shuffles. Then I say, "Are the cards thoroughly mixed? (pause) NO! To really mix it up, you have to think out of the box." I then proceed to do my face up/face down shuffle.
The audience laughs, and I say, "Now THAT'S a serious mess!" What you will do to justify/explain/rationalize the shuffle depends on who you are and what you're doing.

Have you ever knowingly gotten yourself into trouble? You know what I mean...you know that you better not do it, but you do it anyway! You're thinking, "I better not. I know what will happen..." And then you do it! And BAM! You're in trouble...again... Then, after you've gotten into trouble, you say, "Why'd I do that? That's the third time today! When will I ever learn?"
We get ourselves into trouble because we want to! It's just fun! Is there any other reason? Getting ourselves out of trouble is a different matter. A little bit of magic can help a lot. I'll show you what I mean...here it goes...!! Me? Do I look like the kinda guy that is getting into trouble every five minutes? What??!! Patrick

Because I worked in a bar performing magic first my justification was a drunk spectator it just seemed to go with the surroundings I was in and I still keep that justification doing private parties.

I enjoyed your presentational idea, Barry.
In my presnetation I say that I had a person who was determined that I would not be able to complete the trick and they went to great efforts to trip me up. There are many jokes along the way and one of them is that they mix the cards face up and down. Sergeant |

I've heard a 12 year old magician doing this while talking about a drunk gambler he met in one of New Yorks many bars. It really made you cringe.

The justification is to mix them up into an apparent mess.
