This post actually has 2 parts to it, so please bare with me.
1.) Would you say, in your opinion, that it's a good idea to break your card effects up into blocks of 2 or 3 effects at a time? That way you could do those effects and then if someone wanted to see something else, you could move on to say, coin magic. 2.) What effect, in your opinions, best follow up Chicago Opener? See, I'm trying to finally routine some of my effects so that when asked to show someone something, I don't just do everything that I know and maybe bore them, but also so I don't just throw effects together in some patch-work kind of way. Thanks for the input Shawn

I know that in Whit Haydn's Chicago Surprise, he moves on to Brainwave. It will play similar to the CO routine, but as a mentalism effect. Put the BW deck into an opposite color box.

Thanks for the mention, but I actually use the "Chicago Surprise" as my opening effect, and the Brainwave as an "encore effect" after the finish of an entire twenty-five minute close-up performance. I wouldn't run the two one after the other. I follow the "Chicago Surprise" with my cards to pocket routine, the Phoenix Aces, and then Ambitious Card/Card to Wallet, or Ambitious Card/Card on Ceiling. Then I switch to non-card effects, returning to the cards only as an encore with a rising card effect or Brain Wave. I have scarcely changed a line in this basic routine in fifteen years. |

Gosh, you didn't put all that into the manuscript. Trying to make me think a little, huh.

Shawn,
Your going the right way with your routining. It is a good idea to routine an "Act" that can end at any point, depending on audience reaction, interuptions etc. The Chicago Opener is a strong opening card effect therefore it must be followed with an even stronger effect. For that matter it is a good idea for each suceeding effect to be stronger than the one before it. After I perform Chicago Opener I set the two cards used aside and then perform a combination of one or all of the following routines: Ambitious Card, Card in Wallet, Triumph. For me Triumph plays the strongest and ends my card work. for an encore I can always do Kollosal Killer to top them all off. Ronnie Ramin |

In the july 2004 issue of Magic there is a routine that is used by Bob Sheets to follow red hot mama. The effect is basically a 3 part prediction. There is a lot of humor possible within the trick. If you get a chance to check it out I urge you to do so. It is less about trying to impress the audience and more geared towards being fun. With that said the final phase seems to be really strong. I have yet to try this out on anybody due to the fact that I don't have the necessary props. You need a jumbo 3 1/2 card and a jumbo 52 on 1 card.

I like the Chicago Opener, but have on two occasions had a spec ask to see the deck, to look for the original KH. (I am using the Daryl version). I am thinking of controlling the original KH to the top and palming it off while the spec is revealing the KH. Any thoughts?

Buy Chicago Suprise, it takes care of that, and more. To everyone: BUY CHICAGO SUPRISE BY WHIT HAYDN. Out of all the card effects I've seen, it is the best out-of-the-box. It's the best version of Chicago Opener and one of the best card effects around. Quote:
For that matter it is a good idea for each suceeding effect to be stronger than the one before it. Mars, This may be good for a 3 effect routine for tablehopping, but if you are going to be performing for 20-45 minutes then it would serve you to mix up your effects so you get different reactions... Something like: Opener, serious magic, funny or relaxed routine, something visual, another real serious knockout, ect. Mix it up and play around with it, only then will you find what's good for you... To say that every effect should be stronger or any "rules" on it usually wont work, because each performer and audience is different. |

By all means purchase Chicago Surprise from Whit Haydn. Be aware that the most valuable thing you will receive is not the mechanics of the routine. That can be described in a single page or so. The real value is the lesson in how to squeeze out the most magic from a routine. How to get conviction rather than just assent. If you really put this manuscipt to use, you'll be applying the principles that are taught there to all your routines and, as a result, all your magic will become stronger.

Very well said Mike.
I agree with you 100%. The lessons learned and psychological pointers is a huge part of what separates Whit's Chicago Surprise from the rest. The advice has truely improved all my magic. |

Thanks, guys. Glad you found it helpful. I will be putting out a dvd on card routines eventually that will include the Chicago Surprise, but I doubt that I will be able to get all of the philosophy and psychology included in the booklet on video. A lot will be lost I am afraid.

Hi Whit,
I'd love to get your Chicago Surprise. Just went to your site to do it. I'm in the UK for my sins. 20 for the effect, 27.50 for the shipping!! Is there anyway it can be sent by paddle steamer for a little less? Yours in sadness.... Lawrence |

This is good for those ordering big or heavy orders, bad for those making little orders. However, if you will email your order directly to Chef Anton ( chefanton@chefanton.com ), he will send your order out with the exact postage charge, which in this case would be much lower. So don't be sad. Email Chef. |
