If you mix 50lbs of a basic parrot food with: 1 box of graham crackers, 2 bags of peanuts, 1 box of fruit loops, 5 lbs. of mixed nuts and a bag of tortia chips you get the Perfect Parrot Food Mix. My Macaw absolutely loves this mix and so did my cockatoo when I had him. Hopefully this is useful. Thanks.

And if you give them Kaytee Rainbow pellets, you have a perfect balanced diet and no need to mix seeds.

ARNOMAGIE,
Do you mean just give them Kay tee Rainbow pellets? If that is what you mean then you obviously don't care too much about your birds. Think about it, if you could only eat one food everyday for the rest of your life you would get tired of it pretty quick, but if you have a variety then you have a more happy life. I agree that the pellets are a great food and source of everything that a bird needs, but it would get old. Besides that seed/pellets should only be 60% of your bird’s daily diet anyway. The rest should be pretty much what we eat. You can feed your birds whatever you want, but all I know is that my vet tells me regularly that in over 15 years as an avian specialist he has yet to see a more healthy, happy and well taken care of Macaw or Cockatoo. You certainly do have a lot of birds to feed though and my mix would get very expensive for you. I used to have more birds than I do now, but I got to the point that I was traveling so much by air that it was a real hassle getting them on the plane, so I cut down to just my Blue and Gold and six doves. It has given me a lot more time to concentrate on my Macaw. MDS |

HI MDS
Kaytee Raimbow pellets are twice as expensive as a good parrot mix! All the good veterinarians and zoos agree that it's the best diet for parrots. The seeds and peanuts are too oily. I give the Kaytee at night (which is enough for the balance of the bird) and fruits, vegetables in the morning (I agree that parrots need variety). And yes I do care about my bird. That does make sense and it seems to work well for you. And my way works for me. What does all of the oil do to the bird?

Do a search on Google and see that it is a poison I don’t know about your vets but many people in the animal industry stay away for that brand and use pellets form pretty bird, or Zoopreme. Steve |

My macaw is a flyer in my show so she really doesn't have a weight problem because she fly’s at least twice everyday during my practice, but the liver problem does concern me.
MDS Posted: Oct 18, 2004 11:44pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just mixed up a new batch of my parrot food today, but while I was at the Bird Farm I decided to get some pellets for my macaw as well. My breeder told me the same thing that Steve said about Kay-tee products and said that she refuses to carry that brand. They had Pretty Bird and Zupreme and she suggested Zupreme and that is what I bought. I feed my macaw fresh fruits and vegetables in the morning and two dishes of my parrot mix in late afternoon. Today I replaced one of the bowls of mix with pellets. She sampled the pellets, but I think that she still needs to adapt to the change. I guess that is expected though. MDS |
